Question about 1995 Dodge Stratus

Will an alternator belt that's torn affect the transmission dragging? Just found belt ragged and car keeps running down, Is the alternator bad or just the belt? AND will that affect the rpms going up high and trans hard to change gears?? I need to know before I spend any more money or just trash the thing!!! Thanx, shouldaboughtaford!!!

It's an automatic trans. After the car warms up, bout 30 mins, rpms go up high and trans won't shift for a while and then it does. It only happens after driving about 30 mins. I just noticed the alternator belt wearing and was wondering if there could be a connection???

One thing at a time! You can take off the alternator and have it spun tested at the parts store while you order a new belt. The tranny shouldnt have issues like that unless it too is suffering from some electro-mechanical problems. Check the tranny fluid. My guess is that it is black *( from all the friction material wearing off into it) which would put your idea of just turning this car in a good notion. Hard to change gears or hard for you to shift the shifter? The friction material would cause slippage and bad shifts. The shifter being hung up might just be a cable issue. Good luck and keep me posted.

It's just lacking power because of the belt change the belt and everything should work fine again

i would drop the tranny pan and replace the filter and clean the inside of the pan well. look for big pieces of metal. sandpaper thin metal pieces are normal any bigger than you have a problem.

Why does the battery light come on and off,and just changed power steering pump and still wines.

Check your belt and pulleys. Is the tension right? do you need a new belt? Are all the pulleys free wheeling with no noise or roughness? And are they all aligned evenly? Take the belt off and check everything.
The battery light flickering on and off means something is affecting your charging system. Your alternator is being affected, assuming it is still a good alternator that is. So before even testing it, investigate the serpentine belt that runs it and the PS pump. Something like a bad pulley, or one out of line with the others, a slipping belt possibly. You didn't say if the whine affects the power steering? Not sure what would cause that, running too slow, maybe, but that should affect the power steering capability I believe. Is it back in exactly the same place, so it lines up with the other pulleys? Good luck.

95 jeep grand cherokee. Alternator charges intermittently only after engine squeals, belt NOT loose.

if the belt squeals why not fix that first? ?>?????
that is correct, if a shared belt resource, is seized it will cause any belt to slip and the alternator to stall , after all they are SHARED.
some alternators do have the regulator in the ECU. for sure.
why guess, tools are cheap. wana buy a tool.>
did you hand spin all shared pulleys to feel for seizer or use a $5
stethoscope on each for load bearing noise, so simple to do...
they sell this tool called a Laser RPM tool, point and shoot.
its cheap,
The correct RPM of the ALT is publised in the FSM and you can measure it.
i take my crank pulley diameter and divide it by the alt pulley diameter.
eg: one is 8" other is 3"
so the ratio is 2.66 :1
so at engine RPM of 800 x 2.66 you have 2128 rpm on the alt.
basic mech, 101.
so if the tool shows way less than that, then bingo, the pulley is slipping, BTW2 not all slips squeal. so.... the tools rule the world of mechanics.
here is the cheap tool i use to find things with wrong RPM.
i put a dab of liquid paper (walfart) on any pulley and this tool
picks it up and bam RPM exactly.
no hands getting caught in belts etc, no danger.

so recap
belt new.
all things on the belt, feel good spun
all things on that belt , sound good $5 stethoscope.
tension on belt , at spec.
if still bad out comes Mr
DT22334A
http://www.amazon.com/DT2234A-Tachometer-chemical-automobile-airplane/dp/B00BKUNOAW

in the real world , sometimes THINGs only SEIZE on the fly.
picture in mind a dry bearing that keeps dragging more as it spins faster. bingo. its bad. and gets worse at higher RPM and soon it
will seize 100% and throw that belt or shred it.

I cant pin down where it squeels
why not drop the belt (cold engine if shared with water pump)
and now it dont squeal.
easy huh, no belt , no squeal.
i truly hope this helps.
there is no reason to guess, besides a new unglazed belt.
ever.

Keeps shredding belts

Usually the problem is a pulley that is dragging or out of alignment.
The dragging pulley could be an alternator or ac compressor that is failing at random times. Or other accessories.

Battery keeps running down on 96 cadillac elderado

if battery keeps running down. check the voltage across the batery posts while car is off.should be around 12.5 to13 volts. then with tester hooked up to battery, start the car. if alternator is ok, it while read about 14 volts give or take a few volts. if the gharging is low its a bad alternator or the drive belt.

Overheat, engine will automatically stop, low charging on battery.

SOUND LIKE BAD WATER PUMP.IF BATTERY LOW CHARGE LIGHT ON WATER PUMP BEARING COULD BE LOCKING UP DRAGGING DRIVE BELT DOWN ENOUGH TO SLOW DOWN ALTERNATOR TO KEEP BATTERY FROM CHARGING.REPLACE WATER PUMP AND THERMOSTAT.CHECK COOLANT LEVEL SEE IF ANTIFREEZE IN RADIATOR IS LOW. IF SO FILL COOLANT SYSTEM BACK TO NORMAL LEVEL SEE IF WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE LEAKING WHILE ENGINE RUNNING IF SO WATER PUMP IS BAD.

My engine upon starting squeals and gets louder when i accelerate, every once in s blue moon it will stop for a few mins or quiet down????? help

There are only 4 things that will cause a belt to squeal.
1. A bad/worn-out belt
2. A bad or misaligned pully or pulley bearing
3. A bad belt tensioner. (pulley, arm, pivot, or spring)
4. Malfunctioning or bad component (alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor, etc.)

Remove the belt and check ALL pullies to make sure that they rotate smoothly and do not have any horizontal play in them (indicating worn-out bearings). Make sure that the tensioner pully swings freely and does not bind in its travel at any point and that it is properly aligned with the other pullies. A good way to check for proper alignment is to look at the belt position on the pullies with the engine running. If the belt is running on the edge of the pullies instead of in the center, it is usually caused by a bad belt tensioner or a bad bearing on one of the other pullies.

Check the belt for chunks missing, torn or cracked ribs or shiny "glazed" edges, ribs, or back.

I have a saab 1.9 tid the battery not charging light came on ,abs light and other warning lights and the power steering stopped working any idea what the problem is ?

Hi Dave, The problem is that the alternator is not charging, Because of this the battery voltage goes down and the reason it affects the power steering is because the power steering pump is driven by an electric motor ( not the fan belt ) so the system shuts the p/s down to keep other functions running ignition etc, so the engine will keep running to get you home. But steering will be very heavy.
Once you replace the alternator all will be fine
Hope i have been of help to you with this problem

S Belt on Pontiac Grand Prix

If your belt was not properly routed it could be the issue. About 30 miles driving would be enough time to drain the battery, and your problem may very well be related to a improperly routed belt.

Daughter's 1999 Jetta; smelled burnt rubber when leaving work last week. Car ran fine. Yesterday, started squealing (sounded like belt slipping) when started. Later in day, she turned car off and sat with...

It sounds like the alternator belt or the alternator is going bad. The squealing sound was probably the alternator belt. the alternator belt might need to get tightened or replaced or you may need a new alternator. The alternator keeps the battery charged. When the alternator goes bad the battery can not be recharged. You also should keep the power steering fluid up to par or the power steering will go bad on you.
