Look at the cam sprokets they should have an I and an E stamped on them then by the gear they should have a notch. the back timing cover will have a V symbol. then match them up the cam close to the intake side will have the I mark up and the cam on the exhaust side will have the E up.

the crank has a mark at 12 o clock, each cam has a mark at 12 o clock. line them all up and put the belt on. be sure to properly tension the belt. be sure to replace the idler pulley, and the water pump. hope there are no bent valves.

2002 Kia Sportage will not start. Ruled out the battery, alternater, spark plugs and wires, starter...wondering how to tell if it is the fuel pump or fuel filter.

Unhook the fuel line and turn the key. The spill under the motor will let you know if fuel is flowing. The alternative is to check the timing belt, if it is broke it will never try to start. The timing belt is behing all the belts on the front of mine that is a 4 x 4. The timing marks are above the cam pulleys and on top of the crank. It is a pain to do in the yard but it can be done, I did it.

My tensioner broke and messed up my timing on my 2000 kia sportage. I need to know how to re-time my engine.

ok this is easy but get a friend to help. i assume that because you know the tensioner broke that u've gotten everything out of the way on the timing belt.

in the bottom pulley you will see a notch and a little indicator line on the block line those up.

next line the "E" on the right pulley up to the small marker in the top of the backing plate. if you need me to clear this up just ask

then align the "I" on the other pulley to that mark above it and slap on your new belt and your good to go.

Timing belt marking

The timing marks are just above the cams at the "twelve o'clock position"

If necessary, align the timing marks.
NOTE When aligning the cam pulleys with the seal plate marks, align the left cam pulley “I” mark and the right cam pulley on the “E” mark.

WARNING When aligning the timing marks, do not turn the timing gear counterclockwise. Damage to the engine will occur.
