Electric conversion for conventional radiator fan

My belt-driven fan clutch has gone bad. For about the same replacement cost, I can purchase an electric fan conversion kit. A 16" fan draws about 11 amps and the stock alternator is rated at 70 amps. The stock fan was 16" with a 19" diameter shroud. Will I need to upgrade my alternator? I don't have any other electric add-ons (hi-power audio system, driving/fog lights, etc.) on the vehicle.

Can you tell me what size fan will work for me and how to avoid having to upgrade my alternator?

Shouldn't be a problem as the fan should only come on when the engine is hot, if you use a temp sensor switch

may be a waterpump issue or the cooling fan may not be working..some are electric others are driven by the belts..withthe engine off(and I mean stopped) try to spin the belt driven fan by hand,if it freewheels its bad,,(clutch unit on fan no good) this will not move the air through the radiator fins good enough to cool prperly..good luck..

Car is over heating and the stat has been installed & radiator have been flushed,whats next


Physically look in the radiator under the cap(if one exsist's) when cool, for coolant level, and check the valve in the cap for sticking. If air is present in the radiator it can't get out, and more coolant can't get in,(from the overflow). Either clean the cap or replace it and check that it is the CORRECT cap.

If radiator is low on coolant fill it to overflowing, replace cap, and check that coolant overflow is filled to the COLD line or mark. The overflow is normally where you would add coolant. (never overfill the overflow)After refilling as outlined above, check the level every morning for 2 or 3 days until coolant level stops dropping below the cold mark and add coolant to the overflow ONLY. Do not open the radiator cap. Also, if you have even a tiny coolant leak anywhere in the system, air will get drawn in, instead of coolant from the overflow.

For more OVERHEATING PROBLEMS try these...
Radiator fins dirty, clean with a strong stream of water, not high pressure water.
Radiator clogged, try backflushing it, or replace.
Thermostat stuck open or shut, replace it.
Water pump worn out, can no longer move enough coolant, replace it.
Fan shroud broken or missing....
Electric Fan(s) not working, Check the fan, relay, fuse and engine temperature sensor's.
Belt driven fan, belt slipping, fan clutch is bad, fan blades have flattened out.

Truck ran hot after a couple hundred miles. ran cooler at freeway speeds, still hotter than normal ( 240-250) . replaced fan clutch and drove to mexico in july with no problems, but is starting to do it...

Simply reattach it with 4 or 5 screws.

Also, if the vehicle has A/C and electric fans, one fan is dedicated to the A/C and should come on almost the instant the A/C is turned on. The engine fan will run even with the key off, that is normal. The system is trying to cool itself. Hope this helps.

how do the fins on the radiator look? straight or bent? is there any leaves or debris caught between the a/c condenser and the radiator? do you have an electric fan or a belt driven fan? does it seem to operate properly?

It is over heating . there are no leaks the type of clutch fan is thermal but i do not know if that is the correct one or not? it has a new thermostat,and new anti-freeze, water pump is the same when...

How did you know when the cooling fans are not working


You may have one conventional belt-driven fan with a thermal clutch and the other electric or, both could be electric on your car.
The cooling fan that operates during non-AC operation (just a running engine) if electric, will be controlled by a thermal switch in the lower radiator tank and may not turn on at all unless the engine is warmed up. The belt-driven fan should be turning at some speed all the time if the engine is running and at much higher speed with a hot engine.
The fan that cools mostly when the AC is operating won't run under normal operation but may turn on in hot weather (or when the engine is under heavier loads) even without the AC operating.
Checking them would require having a warmed-up engine and the AC turned on. Both fans regardless of type should be turning then.

Check the electric fan(s) if equipped. If it has a belt driven fan, replace the fan clutch. Also rechecking the thermostat is a good idea too, they are sometimes bad right off the shelf.

My car is overheating and i need to know how to put in the water pump?


Is the water pump leaking coolant? If not, then why do you think it's bad?

If the engine is overheating, there are several other things to look at before you consider the replacing the water pump.

Are the fans electric motor driven, or fan belt driven? If fan belt driven, replace the fan clutch. If electric motor driven, check the fan control module and/or fan motors to make sure all is good there. Fan control module tend to fail in weird ways, so if nothing is wrong with the motors, replace the module.

Always, always, replace a thermostat that has overheated. Once overheated, they consistently fail. Make sure you properly refill the radiator with coolant after the stat is changed.

Check that the bottom radiator hose does not collapse.

Check the radiator for corrosion. Boil the radiator out, or have it done, or replace the radiator.

Hi Fooch!

Does the Jeep have electric radiator fans, or is it a conventional engine pulley mounted fan?

Your description sounds like fan failure, wherein the engine overheats when stopped or moving very slowly, due to not enough air being moved through the radiator to cool it down.

This can be confirmed by sitting stopped until the temperature goes up and then driving at normal road speed... if the temp comes back down, this is the problem.

With electric fans, this can likely be caused by a bad fan temp sensor, bad fan motor, bad fan relay, or by a wiring problem...among other possible causes.

With a mechanically driven fan, this can be caused by a bad fan viscuous clutch, missing fan shroud, or possibly loose belts.

A bug/debris clogged radiator will exacerbate the problem, whichever type fan you have, so a trip to the self-serve carwash to clean the radiator is not a bad idea, either.
