TURNS OVER AND STARTS BUT WON'T IDLE,VOLTMETER READS 16 VOLTS IF RPMS ARE INCREASED, TRANNY SLIPS WHEN PUT IN DRIVE

16 volts is ok because thats just your alternator charging your battery. but the bad idle could be a few different things. I would go thru all your vacuum lines with carberator cleaner and spray them if you have a leak it will **** up that carb cleaner and u will definetly notice a change in idle this means you have a hole in a vacuum line. start there do you have check engine light on? Also the transmission start by checking your fluid. transmissions generally slip when gears are going out so you might have to take it in to have that looked at. unless you fell like taking your tranny out and apart.

    its supposed to read s u c k up the carb cleaner.. im not sure whats wrong with that word but aparently fixya doesnt like it. sorry for that

I have a 2005 mercedes c230 kompressor and i want to know if there is any way to check the alternator without a voltmeter.


not really
you can check the voltage out put with a multimeter across the battery terminals ( reads 12 volts at idle and 14.5 with 2,000 rpms but that is not sufficient to test properly
best take it to an accredited auto electrician that can remove a wire and instal an amp meter and voltmeter to get a correct reading

On initial start, alternator fails to register 14 volts until engine is excelerated to 2700 rpm


many alternators will not register at 850rpm.s as the regulator requires a higher out put than 12.5v to start to work It should be charging 13.5v at 950-1000 rpms and move up to 14.5 from that rpms to a max voltage of 15.5v.l It could have dirty slip rings and worn brushes so I would remove it and have it bench tested as car tacho's at idle can be out and it may be idling slower than it actually reads

My voltmeter reads out 16/17 on my 94' Buick Park Ave. will this kill the battery?


Yes. Some voltmeters read higher volts when the voltmeter battery is low. Use a different voltmeter or put a fresh battery in the volt meter or test voltmeter against a known dc voltage to see if the reading is accurate. After this start thinking it is the alternator regulator.

95 accord v-tec was slipping when warmed up put a used tranny in and did the same thing then the next day it wont even go anywhere in drive revs like it is in neutral surely it not two trannys with the...


is this a transmission question
the A/T will not do what.
there are like 100 faults symptoms on any A/T
tell what it does right and wrong?

my guess is all forward gears and reverse are dead
and sure it slips, if in 1st gear or REV.and ar dont move
and engine is at 3000 rpm ,its slip city
this transmissing is shifted electronically
the Model of the tranny ends in E, means that.
so the first test (all this ever word is in the FSM under slips)
you see if the TCM (tranny brain) has errors stored.
that is in the FSM. (factory service manual)
most old cars with TCM have flash codes for engine and tranny separate. so do that.
you do know the transmission must be perfectly grounded
or the TCM will not be able to send commands to the trans , right?
seen many cars with the Factory trans ground strap missing. too many.
if the TCM is happy, we then make sure that
the shift solenioid lines have the correct logic, to get in to say
drive or Reverse (you pickone,)
then measure it with a voltmeter, (all this is in the FSM)
make 100% sure the voltmeter neg. lead id ground to the transmission casing (so i can see the ground fail)
i take my 3 or 4 readings, for each sol. line.
and say they all pass. 0v,. 0v , 12v test. that means
the TCM has told the Trans what to do,
if it trans slips the trans is bad or the clutch is dry or bad.

in fact, ive made up a switch box with toggle switches,
that plugs in to the tranny and and shift it like a manual trans, all day long. 1 switch for each sol. line
100% sure way to prove what end is bad. TCM or gear box.

The car shakes when idle and upon acceleration and deceleration.


it may be the maf / mass,air flow sensor it is located on the air intake duct at the air filter housing you can get a manual and check the volts at the (MAF)sensor to see if its good and the TSP can cause this to and you can test it the same way with a voltmeter i think the tps is 5.0 volts.. at idle the (MAF) should be between 1.3 and 1.7 when motor is revved to 4,000 rpm the voltage should be increased to 4.0 and when stopped it should be less then 1.0 volts .so test the sensors before you buy any parts cause most auto stores want let you return ELE. items

you'r hoping the tranny's not good? any way, yes it sound like its sliping and slipping badly, if cost is a factor one from a junked unit in good codition should work out fine how ever a rebuilt or exchange unit is even better

who ever rebuilt trns missed something poss pcs solenoid, seals leak in input housing,seals or support housing leak,worn valvle in valve body, did he clear shift adapts, did he check for codes, did he do a press check, did he flush cooler nice trns overhaul good thing you got a warranty on job

Auto transmission slips then grabs


first thing i would try is changing the transmission fluid out and filter, i beleive its almost 8 quarts. use a full quart of lucas transmission additive with the new fluid. if this doesn't help, the transmission will either need replaced or rebuilt

Depends on what auto tranny you have. If you take it to an tranny shop and have an exchange rebuilt put in be prepared to shell out $3500.00 for replacement.
