What is the GEM module, how does it apply to the power locks, and how much do they cost? My power locks keep trying to lock and unlock on my 2000 Expedition. Saw a post that said that the GEM module needs replaced. Not sure what this is or if it is what I need for my truck. Please help. Thanks in advance.

Before, you wamt to replace the module that you said. Can you try this simple thing ,check the power door lock relay. The lock relay block located behind the right side of the instrument . hope this can help.

The electronic door lock system has two main components:

Power Locks Operation
The power locks feature allows the customer to lock and unlock the doors via momentary switches located on the driver and passenger door. When the GEM detects a momentary press of the driver or passenger lock button, the GEM will supply power to the driver or passenger lock actuators for approximately 250 ms from relays internal to the GEM. When the GEM detects a momentary press of the driver or passenger unlock button, the GEM will supply power to the driver or passenger unlock actuators for approximately 250 ms from relays internal to the GEM.
Remote Keyless Entry Door Locks Operation
The remote entry feature allows the customer to unlock the driver door, unlock all doors, and lock all doors using a valid remote transmitter as long as the ignition switch is not in RUN or START. The driver door is unlocked whenever the GEM detects a valid remote transmitter unlock transmission. All the doors are unlocked when the GEM detects a second valid remote transmitter unlock transmission within three seconds of the first transmission. All the doors are locked when the GEM detects a valid remote transmitter lock transmission. If the GEM detects a second valid remote transmitter lock transmission within three seconds of the first transmission, the doors will lock again, the horn will sound for 20 ms and the parking lamps will flash for 200 ms to indicate the doors are locked. If the GEM detects the driver or passenger door is ajar during the second lock transmission, the doors are locked again and the horn is sounded twice. If the GEM detects a valid remote transmitter lock transmission within three seconds of detecting a valid remote transmitter unlock transmission, the GEM will lock all the doors

Programming -Keyless Entry Remote Transmitter
NOTE: All keyless entry remote transmitters (15K601) must be programmed at the same time. NOTE: All previous transmitter identification codes (TIC's) will be erased when programming mode is entered. NOTE: To program (or reprogram) the keyless entry remote transmitters into the generic electronic module (GEM)(14B204), perform the following steps.
Turn the ignition from OFF to RUN eight times within 10 seconds, ending in RUN. If the GEM has successfully entered program mode, it will lock and unlock all the doors.
NOTE: The first TIC must be entered within 7.5 seconds of entering the program mode and additional TICs must be entered within 7.5 seconds of the first TIC. The programming mode is exited whenever the timing constraints are not met.
Press any button on a keyless entry remote transmitter, and the doors will lock and then unlock to confirm that each keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed.
If the door locks do not respond for any keyless entry remote transmitter, wait for several seconds and press the button again.
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, or wait up to five minutes after step 1, to exit program mode. If a keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed (or reprogrammed), the GEM will lock and unlock all the doors one last time.

The electronic door lock system has three main components: the remote anti-theft personality (RAP) module, attached to the rear left hand quarter panel, the three-button (hand held) keyless entry remote transmitter (15K601), and the keyless entry keypad (14A626) on the driver side door.
The door locks are controlled by the RAP module through three external relays: the driver unlock relay (if equipped with two step unlocking), the all unlock relay, and the all lock relay. These relays are located in the relay box on the LH rear quarter panel.

Generic Electronic Module (GEM)/Central Timer Module (CTM) Controlled Functions
The generic electronic module (GEM) is equipped on four-wheel drive vehicles with power windows. The central timer module (CTM) is equipped only on two-wheel drive vehicles without power windows. NOTE: GEM/CTM diagnostics are compatible with the scan tool.
The GEM/CTM incorporates the functions of several different modules into one, and offers diagnostics to easily locate and repair concerns affecting the subsystems that it controls.
The GEM/CTM constantly monitors the systems it controls and reports a concern in the form of a diagnostic trouble code (DTC). A DTC can be retrieved with the scan tool through the communication link.
The scan tool is a menu-driven tester that allows the user to run specific tests. The scan tool can isolate faults in the GEM/CTM subsystems through a symptom-driven diagnostic procedure. Connecting the scan tool to the GEM/CTM communication link will not alert the GEM/CTM. If the GEM/CTM is "asleep" when the diagnostic connector is plugged in, the GEM/CTM must be "awakened". If the communication link cannot be established, turn the ignition to RUN. NOTE: The GEM/CTM has a sleep function to minimize battery consumption. During the sleep mode, the GEM/CTM turns off all outputs and monitors only the following:
door ajar (driver door, passenger door, liftgate, LH rear and RH rear doors).

The perimeter anti-theft feature provides an audible and visual alarm when unauthorized access to the vehicle is detected. When an intrusion is detected by any door or liftgate ajar switches, or the hood and trunk tamper switches it sends a ground signal to the GEM. When the GEM receives a signal indicating intrusion into the vehicle, the GEM supplies a ground signal to the horn control relay and the park lamps relay. The relay closes, supplying the power which activates the horn and the park lamps. The pulse stretcher module applies to wagons only. Due to the distance between the liftgate disarm switch and the GEM, the disarm switch signal is not present long enough for the GEM to recognize. The pulse stretcher module receives pulse input when switch is turned to unlock. The pulse stretcher module holds the pulse active for about 60ms so the GEM can recognize the signal and disarm the system. The perimeter anti-theft feature does not arm until 20 seconds elapses after locking the vehicle. The perimeter anti-theft device will disarm only when
unlock is pressed on the keyless entry remote transmitter.

The generic electronic module (GEM) controls the power door lock and keyless entry system. Lock and unlock operation is achieved through the use of internal relays in the GEM. The relays are all door lock, all door unlock and driver door unlock. The normal path of the relays is to ground.
Pressing the door lock control switch to lock or unlock sends a ground signal to the GEM. The same GEM pin is used for unlock and lock input. The unlock signal is a direct connection to ground. The lock signal is altered by an internal resistor in the door lock control switch. This varied resistance identifies lock or unlock command to the GEM.
The door locks can also be controlled by the door key cylinder switches. For the liftgate door lock switch, turning the key to lock or unlock sends a ground signal to the GEM. The GEM will then ground the all door lock or all door unlock relay supplying voltage to the actuators. Turning the driver door key cylinder to the lock position sends a ground signal to the GEM. The GEM will then ground the all door lock relay supplying voltage to the actuators. Turning the driver door key cylinder to unlock sends a ground signal to GEM. The GEM will ground the driver door unlock relay and supply voltage to only the driver door actuator. If a second unlock ground is received within three seconds of the first, the GEM will ground the all door unlock relay supplying voltage to the passenger door actuators (if 2-stage unlock is equipped). Keyless Entry
The keyless entry remote transmitter sends a signal that is received by the GEM internal antenna. Depending on the signal received, the GEM module will ground the appropriate internal relay and lock all doors or unlock the driver door. If the unlock signal is received again within three seconds of the first unlock, the GEM will ground the internal all door unlock relay unlocking all doors. The lock and unlock relay output to the actuators is controlled by the GEM, the same as power door lock operation from the control switch.
If the signal received is for the panic button, the GEM will cycle ground to the park lamp relay coil and horn relay coil. The park lamps and horn will continue to cycle until the panic button is pressed again or the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position, or after the timer expires.

The keyless entry keypad is hardwired to the GEM. The GEM interprets the inputs from the keyless entry keypad and then controls the associated operation. The keyless entry keypad will be illuminated for five seconds when any button is pressed. Additionally, it will request the illuminated entry feature to turn the courtesy lamps on. If a lock all doors code is entered, the illumination will turn off, as well as request the illuminated entry feature to turn off the courtesy lamps. When pressed, the keyless entry keypad supplies the ground signal to the GEM or the GEM receives a signal from the keyless entry remote transmitter. Then the GEM outputs a ground signal to the appropriate lock or unlock relay which supplies the power to the actuator to lock or unlocks all doors, including the luggage compartment. The keyless entry remote transmitter also unlocks the liftgate or activates the panic alarm by sending a signal to the GEM. ---------------------------------------------------------------
