My 2003 Sonata turns over but will not start until

My 2003 Sonata (6 cyl) turns over but will not start until I pump the gas 1, 2, or 3 times. After that it starts and runs perfectly.

Thanks for the very quick response. To answer your questions, no it doesn't turn over slow, fast or nothing out of the ordinary. It starts everytime but like I said I need to press the gas a couple of times before it will start. This just started about 1 1/2 weeks ago and procressively has gotten to be everytime I start it after it sits for maybe 1/2 hour. I haven't had the battery check yet but will do so on my way home. Not sure if it's the original battery or not my guess is that it is. I bought it about 4 years ago and I know I didn't replace it. Sounds like a good place to start. Do you think it could have anything to do with the fuel filter or fuel pump? Once the cars starts it runs perfectly.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I may be able to offer more assistance than what's below if you can answer the few questions I have in the next paragraph.

Presumably, you somehow got the car started after pumping the gas two to three times. Let's start with that. What was it necessary for you to do to get the car started? When you were able to get it started, did it crank normally, slowly, or quickly? Does the problem only occur after waits of a certain time after driving the car? If you can think of anything all no start the events have in common (temp, humidity, whatever) please add that as well.

First, I'll say that I find the weak starter diagnosis dubious. Hyundai has very few starter problems. but still it's possible.

If you've got the original battery in your car, I'd be very suspicious of the battery. How did you conclude the battery was good? If it's new, that's a pretty good (although not perfect) indicator. On the other hand, if it was based on a handheld computer tester, I'll just say that they're not always accurate. If you're not sure if you've got the original battery in your car, here's what it will look like: it'll have a black top and white case (possibly hidden inside a black plastic shield to keep the heat away), and will have "Solite" written on the white portion in big red letters. The warranty on the original battery is 3 years-- free replacement after two years; you'll need to pay 75% of the parts between two and three years. It's likely you're over 3 years-- it'll depend on the actual in-service date. If so, and you need a battery, you'll be paying for the repairs wherever you have them done.

The alternator is another possibility, as are some other less common electrical issues. I'd expect that the dealer did a system test and found nothing wrong. Again, if they used a handheld electronic tester-- all Hyundai dealers have one of these; it's a required special tool-- it'll sometimes show a weak battery as good or vice versa.

Another possibility is your your ignition timing has a problem or your fuel timer has a problem
Here's what I'd recommend:

If after reading the above, you think it's the battery, just put one in. They're relatively inexpensive and installation is easy-- just make sure you don't hook it up backward! If the problem happens again, call roadside and have it towed to the dealer.

If you're still doubtful about the battery, put a set of jumper cables in the car for emergencies when you need to get it started right away, and, if you can, call roadside assistance when it happens again.

Finally u can narrow down your problem but still u could not narrow down your problem speak with the service manager of the dealer. Tell him how disturbing and disconcerting it is that your car will sometimes not start but they've been unable to find a problem. If they'd like to check it again, offer to leave it there a few days if they think it'll help them.

Thanks for the comment. Yes you can check the fuel filter and then fuel pump. As per me the fuel injection timing also might have a problem ... check for the ignition spark timing ..

The solution is with the EVAP canister. 2003 sonata has a history of stalled starting if you tap off when filling up. The canister gets flooded. To solve this change the EVAP canister and the canister close valve

Did you change the fuel filter at the same time, check the pressure and flow, if ok make sure there is a good spark, and the injectors are pulsing, also check or replace the throttle position switch.

2003 Hyundai Sonata with 4 cyl. PO301 error code. Have replaced spark plugs, wires, coil packs, and mass air flow sensor. Replaced air filter due to heavy gas smell. Car was starting after tapping gas 3...

P0301 - Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected.

Possible Causes:
- Improper spark plug at cylinder #1
- Insufficient compression at cylinder #1
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- The injector circuit is open or shorted at cylinder #1
- Fuel injector #1 may be faulty
- Intake air leak at cylinder

Possible Solutions:
- Perform Injector Service
- Replaced Spark Plug #1
- Replaced Injector #1
- Replaced Ignition Coil #1

Being you have a heavy gas smell I would look into the injectors. If injector #1 is over producing it can cause a misfire. Test your compression and fuel pressure.

First I would make sure that the lug wires on the distributor are correct. Sometime when replacing the wires is is easy to get them crossed. Below is the firing order on both engines for the Cherokee. I have also had the module go bad before as well. Below is a diagram which calls this module a camshaft positon sensor. Hope this helps. 800d646a.gif

2000 6 cyl Sonata won't start.

check the fuel press, a quick check of the pump can be made by turning the key on with the windows rolled up and all accessories off, , u should hear a faint hum for about 5 seconds, if u don't most likely the pump has stuck from the cold or wear or both.
