Question about 1997 BMW 318

1 Answer

My 95 318ti runs fine when you start it. Then when driving and warm it dies. You can restart it and move the car briefly before it die again. When it cools down it runs again fine until hot. The auto trans has been replaced, the alternator, tune up done, crank sensor replaced. Two mechanics are stumped. Both computers have been switched out, bu the problem has not gone away. Good car that won't run. Any ideas. Could the failing alternator have messed up some other part of the electronics? I appreciate your help as this is a "stumper."

O.K. Thanks. My tempt gauge has never gotten into the hot zone. It is just when the car is warm it shuts off. Do you still think it is the above?

Super quick responses that make sense. If the solution really works, this sight will be a "God Send". Thanks for giving us another solid avenue to explore!

Engine cools perfectly, it will sit there and idle all day long. Temp gauge and external thermometer show normal temps, coolant is clean. It stays running in R or D until you get off the throttle. Unloaded, the engine will spin right to redline, sounding great.

I thought it was the torque converter locking up and stalling the motor. Trans fluid was burnt. Put a used trans in it and it ran well for a couple of weeks and a few hundred miles, now the same problem again!!

HI! It may not be the sensors nor the alternator. I suspect a faulty water pump and a clogging radiator in the car. If its bad, the water wont circulate and may cause your engine to be hot enough to shut itself off. Have it replaced to get your car cool and you'll be good. Hope this helps and have a good one!

Yes it may, considering that the temp sending unit of the engine may be faulty giving you inaccuracy on the temp. I suggest that please replace the temp sending unit too. Good luck!

My car is sputtering and dying. If I try to restart it, it will immediately go into sputtering/dying mode. If I wait a while an hour or so it will start up and drive fine.

When was the last time that the carburetor was stripped and cleaned? Also have you checked the fuel filter? Finally, the problem seems to come and go as the engine is run (and it gets hot) check that the fuel line and any electrical cables are well away from the hot engine as far as is possible.

1996 mercedes c280 dies when put in drive

Engine stalls or RPM fluctuates at idle up and down or dies near idle.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

Just turns off on it's own, Wait 60 sec. restart press pedel it dies.

This engine is electronically controlled so the first thing that must be done here is to have the systems control computer tested for fault codes and then do the proper diagnostics based on those codes.

read your code

,my advice to you is to purchase a Chilton or equivalent service manual for your vehicle,
all the necessary information to service
most any problem can be found within the pages, these manuals can be obtained
from almost any parts suppler at a reasonable cost there will be a section on how to retrieve codes and list of faults and basic repair suggestions

sounds like the head or head gasket is blown. your cylinders may be getting coolant in them which will not only cause the motor to lockup, but also cause bent rods and valves. check your oil dipstick and transmission dipstick to see if it looks like water or coolant is presant, also check the coolant to see if it smells like gas or has any kind of oil in it, if so, your head is likely blown.
