You need to get a scanner on it to see what the error is that the computer has found. The check engine light goes on when the computer has found an issue.

My 2000 mercury mountaineer wont start. When I try to start it every thing goes blank. I twist the battery cables and everything pops back on .

First does the battery have good charge (12v). Does the wire running into the battery terminals have complete contact with the terminals? Sometimes the wiring into the terminals fray and or slide out away from the terminal housing. It could be a few things but try those first

I would say the first answer is correct but you should also check for corrosion on battery terminals, simply take poles off sandpaper battery and connection and if you can use a battery temporarily replace it and see if problem goes away. Could be battery itself is not charging to proper volt/amps.

Turn ignition on and every thing goes dead...leave it a while and lights and stuff come back on till I hit the ignition again

Check your battery connections for corrosion. Take off the negative and then positive connection to the battery. Clean the posts and terminals. You can use baking soda mixed in hot water to clean them. Be careful not to get the solution near the vent caps. Once clean put the positive terminal on and tighten. Then put on the negative and tighten. Check the battery voltage with a volt meter for more than 12 volts, 12.6 is normal. Try to start the car

My battery light and brake light goes on , some time goes off and on / I have a new battery and I change the altalnator

Check the battery terminals (where they are connected to the engine.) Those clamps can be loose or corroded. It happened to me and if i hit a bump or the road was bumpy, the battery cables would slide loose and the power would flicker or die completely
Open the hood when the car is off and try to wiggle the positive nad negative connections on your battery. They shouldn't move at all. If they're loose, tighten them up carefully. If they're covered in battery acid or corroded, then you may need new terminals for your new battery to connect well to your engine. Good luck, i hope this helps.

How do I replace battery cables on a 1993 ford escort?

From what I can determine, the battery cables are part of an engine sub harness. Cost of the part is in the $300 range. However, I suspect your real problem is the connectors on the cables which attach to the battery. They should be cleaned very well, free of all signs of corrosion and tightened securely. There is a common problem of the terminals corroding and cracking / breaking. They can be replaced easily and cheaply by cutting off the old terminal(s) , stripping back (or leaving exposed) about a 1/2" of wire. If wire has any corrosion, sand down to remove corrosion. The replacement terminals should be the clamp on type that you insert the wire into the clamp connection on back of new terminal and tighten it down securing the wires to the new terminal, then attaching them back to the battery. Cost around $10, buy some anti-corrosion spray for batteries also and spray them well after installation to battery to prevent this from happening again.
NOTE: Negative or black (if color coded) should come off first. Then remove positive (red) cable. Remove both cables from battery before performing repairs. Positive (red) cable goes back on first, negative cable (black) goes on last. This will prevent you from damaging your computer system and eliminate the chance of arcing (sparking) while effecting repairs.

  • Use a wrench to remove the negative and positive battery cables: They are clearly labeled "+" and "-." Always remove the negative cable first, as this isolates the power to the metal parts of your car. Tuck the cables away from the battery as you don't want them to accidentally touch a battery terminal when you're wiring your alternator.

    Locate the alternator terminals. There are two: one marked "live," "pos" or "+" and the other marked "neg," "field" or "-."

    Locate the two cables. The positive (red) cable goes to your battery via a wire loom or harness. The negative (black) cable attaches to a metal part of your car.

    Check how the cables attach to the alternator terminals. Some connect using eyelets that hook over the terminal and tighten with a bolt; others connect by inserting the wire under the terminal and tightening a bolt.

    Loosen the two bolts using a suitable-sized wrench or, if the cables connect using eyelets, remove the bolts.

    Insert the exposed end of the negative (black) cable under the loosened bolt on the negative terminal of the alternator, then tighten the bolt. If the cable has an eyelet, hook it over the terminal and screw the bolt back in place and tighten using a wrench.

    Insert the exposed end of the positive (red) cable under the loosened bolt on the positive terminal of the alternator, then tighten the bolt. If the cable has an eyelet, hook it over the terminal and screw the bolt back in place and tighten using a wrench.

    Replace the positive battery cable on the positive battery terminal using a wrench. Replace the negative battery cable on the negative battery terminal.

    Car makes a ticking noise when I try to start it. Tightened the cables, checked water in battery cells.Wouldn't start last week tightened the cables and it started, but not this time.

    Take a piece of sandpaper, pull the cables off, and rub the terminals to bright and shiny. Then follow the cables to wherever they go, and make sure ground is tightened well onto the engine block/firewall/wherever, and the positive goes nicely to the starter and wherever else. Your battery might be slowly going down, but I doubt it.

    How does the alternator bracket go on

    Remove the accessory drive belt. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the generator electrical connector. Remove the engine harness terminal from the generator: - Slide the boot back along the cable. - Remove the engine harness cable nut (3). - Remove the engine harness terminal from the stud. Remove the generator bolts and generator. Install the generator. Install the generator bolts. Tighten the generator bolts to 50 N?m (37 lb ft). Install the engine harness terminal to the generator: - Install the engine harness terminal to the stud. - Install the engine harness cable nut (3). Tighten Tighten the engine harness cable nut to 13 N?m (10 lb ft). - Slide the boot over the generator stud. Connect the generator electrical connector (1). Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure . Install the accessory drive belt

    Just bought a Chev. Impala (2007) last week and the car starter worked. Now it just makes a clicking sound but won't start. No problems starting it manually. I did have my winter tires put on two days...

    Sounds like a case of poorly contacting cables. Check for corrosion at the battery terminals, at the other ends of those, one going to the starter itself, the other to chassis ground or the engine block. As a start, I would loosen the battery terminals, rotate them, then re-tighten. I wouldn't remove them since this may disable your stereo; a common problem when a battery goes dead or is replaced. Changing your tires didn't cause this, it is just a coincidence.
