How hard is it to do rear disc brakes on a 2001 Yukon XL 4wd . I am thinking about doing a "pad slap" front and rear. Any issues doing that?

Very easy, just going to need some simple hand tools. Possible a torx 55 bit for the front caliper pins and some sort of c clamp to push pistons back. Be sure to lube your slide up well to keep them from rusting up.

FYI... I'm no mechanic or anything, but we just recently had our brakes repaired because the Denali has brakes inside of a component that most people are unaware of. If you take it to someone who is qualified, they should know if you need to replace these also.

2001 GMC Yukon 4wd -- inside of front brake rotors worn unevenly, what causes this? Caliper slide pins seem to be OK, caliper slides against bracket OK. -David

This is not uncommon. It comes from the design of the disc brake systems which contain the one piston. The ideal condition would be that the clamping pressures are equal for both the inside/inboard pad and the outboard pad, but that just does not happen. It's always good to make sure that the slide pins are lubed with a good brake caliper grease and that you use a good quality original equipment brake pad set. I recomend using the AC Delco brand. This will also prevent any squeeking that you will get from "cheap" pads. Sounds like everything is working good. Let me know if you need anything else.

2001 Yukon rear disc brake pads are wearing out fast. Just replaced them 30k miles ago. Indicators are touching. What would cause this? Could it be a porportioning valve?

Sadly, that's about average mileage for GM pads. Alot has to do with weight of your rig. Question? Did you replace or resurface rotors? If not, that can accelerate wear, but 30k is about average. If you want longer life, flip for the ceramic or better grade pads.

I just had my 2002 Yukon XL rear barkes replaced. New calipers and pads, the parking brake doesn't work. Shouldn't they have found that when they were doing this work?

Of course they should have checked the parking brakes too. On the Yukon XL, the parking brakes are brake shoes that operate inside of a drum that is molded to the interior side of the rear disc brake rotors. I would take it back to the shop and voice my frustration if I were you and tell them that you feel they should do the parking brakes at no charge for your time and aggravation. They were right there to replace them if they re-surfaced your rotors anyway!

On 2001 gmc yukon rear disc brakes after u loosn the bolts on the caliper do they come all the way out and do u have to remove the bracket that holds the caliper on

It should pull off, you may have to get a big "C" clamp and push the caliper piston back, or sometimes you can pry the piston back with a bar or screwdriver, be careful what you pry on.

The hard part is pressing the caliper piston abck into the caliper so you can get the new, thicker pads over the rotor. A large C Clamp works best.

First remove the cap off the master cylinder. Push in the piston on one caliper with a c clamp, or pry it back between the pad and rotor with a prybar. Then remove the 2 bolts on the caliper itself. Replace pads.Go to other side, repeat sequence

Brake problem

Hi Tora, Go to the back brakes. This is where the prob could be. But with you bleeding the brakes, the peddle has went beyond its normal travel causing the rubbers in the master cylinder to get messed up. Happens too often! Replace the master cylinder 'after' you had a good look at the back! Frankster016
