Question about 1989 Mercedes-Benz 300-Class

1 Answer

I have 1989 300e mercedes. If i drive and let sit overnight it will not start. Battery dead. I replaced the battery and alternator. If i charge battery for less than 5 minutes it will crank and start up. Any ideas on what could be pulling that much power from the battery to drain it? I checked voltage on fuses and only three are pulling power when the car is off. 1 is the clock, radio ect. fuse. 2 is to the aux. fan.. 3 is to lock controls, antenna, ect.. They are pulling about 11.8 volts.

Do the fans run properly and shut off when cars is off? If not they may be draining the battery. A bad stock antenna could drain battery because of the control module. Also the central locking pump if it keeps running (its supposed to shut off after 30 seconds) but if it fails it will drain the battery.

Disconnect each system 1 by 1 or pull fuses 1 by 1 to find out. I would believe its your neutral safety switch tho. Its on the transmission.

Batteries have a service life of 2-5 years. It seems like your battery is in need of replacement. Have it tested, or if it is more than 3 years old, just get a new one.

Startingproblem

Your truck won't start -battery is dead -charge overnight and check voltage- it should be 12-13.5v in the morning- when the truck starts check the voltage at the battery while the motor is running-you should get a reading of 13.5-14.5v. If battery won't charge overnight it may have a dead cell and needs to be replaced- if you get a reading of less than 12v with motor running your alternator needs replaced -cheers Denny

2007 Corvette new battery will not hold a charge. Will charge overnight and start. Sits overnight and dead. Why?

Hi,
There's a draw on the system. you'll need to have it diagnosed for electrical. Could be the alternator - bad diode in mine caused it to kill the battery.

There's a LOT of stuff on Vette's that could cause this.

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you have the battery charged. It can be an indication of a weak battery or a faulty alternator. If the battery light still on after charging then the problem will surely be on the alternator itself. If that's the case the alternator should be replaced to resolve the problem.

You may try to reset it to by removing the positive battery connector, letting it sit for at least 5mins. then reconnect it again. This will reset the system and can get the battery light off.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

SOUNDS LIKE THE BATTERY IS SHOT AND NEEDS REPLACING. MOST BATTERIES AVERAGE BETWEEN 2-4 YRS. I'VE SEEN SOME BATTERIES ONLY LASTING A LITTLE MORE THAN A YEAR. DEPENDING ON HOW YOU USE THE VEHICLE, MATTERS HOW LONG A BATTERY CAN LAST. IF YOU SIT & IDLE THE VEHICLE WITH THE A/C ON,FAN AT HIGH SPEED, LIGHTS ON, STEREO RUNNING WILL SHORTEN LIFE CAUSE THERES NOT ENOUGH ALTERNATOR SPEED TO CHARGE THE BATTERY. REMEMBER, WHAT VOLTAGE IS CONSUMED BY THE VEHICLE, THE ALTERNATOR REPLACES THE VOLTAGE BACK INTO IT AND MAINTAIN. PROVIDING YOU DON'T HAVE A RED BATTERY WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASH WHILE DRIVING, IT'S SAFE TO SAY THAT THE ALTERNATOR IS CHARGING. BUT YOU SHOULD HAVE THE CHARGING SYSTEM CHECKED ON YOUR CAR TO ENSURE PROPER OPERATION. GOOD LUCK.

You will burn out your alternator if you keep on doing this. The alternator is not a charger. If you have a dead battery you should always charge it overnight on a charger. To keep the battery fresh all that you have to do is disconnect the terminals.Yes this is normal because the car has clocks and alarms that drain power even when the key is off. If you let the battery set to long while it is drained it will not take a charge.
