Question about GMC Sierra 1500

3 Answers

2000 gmc sierra 1500 5.3, Auto 4WD, Auto Transmission. tried to put my truck in 4 low... in neutral.... i could hear it trying to engage but wouldnt go in. then it tried to back in to 4 high and the light kept blinking and then the service 4wd light came on, and then the 2wd, 4wd high and low lights shut off. at that time i was stuck. pulled the truck out and it drives like its stuck in 4 low, but only the back tires turn. then.. while trying to drive the truck back to the yard the transmission would go into neutral while in driving until i would shut the truck off and start it then i could drive again for a 10 feet and then it would go back into neutral. It did this in drive, third, second, and first gear. Mind you the truck would drive like its in 4low until it would cut out. transmission fluid is good, the first thing i checked. WTF.

    all the relays are good.

when the truck stops moving while in gear i go to put it in park and something starts grinds in the transmission or t-case, with no lights on the 4x4 dash

  • stickybear May 07, 2010

do you know what type of scanner i need to retrieve codes from the t-case?

I believe that transmission has some relays in the side of the transmission that regulates shifting. If I am right i think one of them are not working. A GM dealer can detect the problem by plugging their analyzer and take it for a ride and watch the analyzer as they drive. Ride with them if they will let you and they can explain as they show you the meter. Good luck maybe you won't need the transmission torn down. That is why I suggest you ride along while they test it on the move. Darrell Sorenson

Now I don't know what to say it will take an analyzer I think. Sorry I could not help. Darrell Sorenson

The scanner I observed was a GM dealers scanner, it analyzed the transmission on the move.

Hi.

The problem is usually caused by a bad switch or by a grounding problem to the control module. Check switch wiring and ground to module.

Check the switch on the instrument panel.

The transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) is located behind the dash, on the steering.

Below the module. Check wiring and ground to module the TCCM ground is indicated as nr 3

2000 gmc sierra 1500 5.3, - a37f314.gif

Codes are read accessing the module called TCCM (transfer case control module). To read TCCM usually you need a transfer port module, along with a common OBD tool. Here a generic transfer port.
The tool above is a generic part. Althought it should work on GMC Sierra, it is better to ensure wit the seller.

Regarding instead the OBD II code reader, you can just purchase a tool like the one below. It will work on any ECU installed after 1995:
AutoScanner OBD II Code Scanner

The scan can also be done at the car dealer.

Before scanning the TCCM , scan the ECU with the Code Scanner. The TCCM is a rather simple module. If any code is stored in there, it would probably be ground failure.

Check switch and connectors to modules ground.

Hello. I am glad you checked the fluid because that can be the culprit. Since it is not the problem you will have to get your truck into the transmission shop, I have had good luck with AAMCO. Joe

My 1997 GMC Sierra lights for 4hi and 4lo blink when i push the 4hi button and then goes back into 2hi. but when i push 4lo it locks in and works fine. I tried changing the 4wd motor on the transfer c

THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR IS ONLY FOR 4WD LOW. That would have never been the problem as soon as you confirmed it shifted into 4wd Low. 2wd and 4 Hi work off of vacuum. You may have one or two issues. A vacuum leak up by the front axle that engages the 4wd HI or the sensors on the transfer case.

4wd will not engage on my 1996 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup

Ok the drive shaft will spin thats good. remove the front driff actuator and see if the plunger extents. if it doesn't check that the power and grond ar ok. If they are then replace the actuator. Just so you know the two actuator may be diffrent. If it has been replaced no problem. If it hasn't ever been replaced then ther is a updated part it come as a kit witha harness spacer and actuator.

2004 GMC Sierra 1500 4wd. Auto transfer case light issue

I have the same problem. It is intermittent and sometimes shows up with service transmission message. To get rid of it just put the truck in park, press the 2 high button and shift into drive while it is still flashing. I will worry about it more when it blows up. You can drive with the vehicle showing the solid neutral and it seems to make no difference. It has to be a wake up problem between the control modules. It only happens on start up.
