I have a 1991 Mercedes 350SD. The injection pump was removed and the shaft moved. How do I set the injection pump with the timing marks on the cam and crank? Thanks, Bernie

This engine is timed at t.d.c.. With the crank at 0 degrees you will start with your intake cam. this cam is hollow and advances( it actually moves to the right after 2500 rpm ) because it has a distributerless ign.. The timing marks for the cams are holes in the back of the gear flange where you can put a small 3 or 4mm. punch through the back of the flange resting the punch on the top of the head. the hole will be to your right on the intake and to your left on the exhaust( outside towards the manifold) When you get the intake cam timed hold the cam and turn the gear to the left as far as you can( if you look at the top of the advancer you can see the mechanism resting against the housing) If you do not the cam will over advance and hit a piston. Time the exhaust cam and put in your tensioner( I always reset the tensioner by knocking out the insert and starting it at the first detent( replace if possible). turn the engine around by hand and double check your marks you may have to move one of your cams a tooth to the left or right. check your harness wire. Check if the wire coating is brittle then you have to change it. The original harness has a lifespan so what we did is to replace the wirings one by one with a japanese made wires that wont get brittle. More durable

HOW DO I GO ABOUT SETTING THE TIMING CORRECTLY ON A 1991 TOYOTA PICK UP 22R


Does it pop and backfire? Are you sure the distributor was also correctly set? If any of that is true, you may be 180° out of time.

Does anyone have a diagram for the timing marks on a case g188d diesel engine that I could see


if you know where the timing marks are supposed to be the use the old method of cam/crank timing to check and adjust to where the marks will be. Remove no 1 injector and turn the engine over until no 1 piston is coming up on injection stop when you reach TDC. mark on flywheel of harmonic balancer. If there is valve clearance ot both rockers turn the engine another 180 degrees and bring the piston to TDC again. watch the rockers and if you turn back a few degrees or turn forward a few degrees you will see ( in the forward direction) the exhaust valve closing and at the same time the inlet valve will be opening. This is known as valve rock. As you move the piston bacvk and forward over TDC you will see the valve movement. set on TDC and check the timing marks with the positions indicated. Remove and reposition the cam shaft gear to achieve the correct mark alignment or pull the cam shaft out just enough to realign the teeth to the mark. At the most you will be about 1 tooth out. The pump timing will be out 180 degrees as you are setting the valve timing on the induction stroke and you will need to turn the engine 180 degrees to compression stroke for the pump timing marks to line up. the injection mark on the flywheel is what you are looking for and when it is at the correct number of degrees as indicated by injection / lightning flash sign then the marks for the pump should be just about lined up

How to set timing on a 1985 Mercedes 300d


If the timing chain broke, the timing of the injection pump is likely off also. In order to time that correctly, you need to remove the pump. If you want to tackle that I'll send you more information about setting the basic timing of the pump.

Timing belt set-up for a 2000 Seat Inca 1.9 SDi

1. Align the crankshaft timing marks on the flywheel / gearbox

2. Remove the valve cover
3. Lock the camshaft

4. Fit the injection pump locking pin

5. Loosen the camshaft gearwheel bolt, 180 degrees. Use a wrench to counter-hold
6. Loosen the camshaft gearwheel while holding it in place

7. Fit the timing belt in the sequence as shown in the below figure: a - b - c - d - e - f - g

8. Fit the timing belt and camshaft gearwheel together
9. Turn the tensioner clockwise to align both marks

10. Tighten the large bolt on the tensioner to a torque of 20 Nm
11. Check for correct fit
12. Lock the camshaft. Tighten the camshaft gearwheel bolts: 45 Nm. Use a wrench to counter-hold
13. Remove helping tools
14. Turn the engine two rotations by hand
15. Repeat the procedure if required
16. Fit the vacuum pump
17. Refit the crankshaft pulley. Tighten torque: 20 Nm + 20 degrees
18. Fit the timing belt cover
19. Refit the valve cover
20. Fit the ancillary drive belt
21. Refit the inlet air manifold hoses
22. Check the injection timing

Torque settings:
Camshaft gearwheel: 45 Nm
Tensioner pulley: 20 Nm
Crankshaft pulley: 20 Nm + 20 degrees

How to set timing on a injection pump on a 1.9 tdi jetta 2003 did not use the tools on the crank and pin broke off in the pump so i think my timing is out on the car doesnt want to start


Go to a site for tools for the TDi and get the proper tool set. You need a scanner to properly set the timing as well.

Doing it by marking the sprockets and hoping is a dangerous undertaking, to say nothing of costly if you do it wrong.

When you have set the timing at the mark in the flywheel, with the cam lock in back of the head, the pin in the injection pump and tensioner loosened up, you can onstall the cam belt and tighten the tensioner so the V lines up with the pointer.

Now remove the locks and hand turn the engine over two times and recheck the marks..okay ? If yes, then you can run the motor.

Now plug in the scanner and wait until coolant over 85C and look at timing. Adjust as necessary.

If EVER this engine is cranked with timing of cam off over 8 degrees, the valves get bent.

How do i set timing mercedes benz e-320


easy to do ,no1 cylinder at tdc no1 and single camshaft turned till the cam lobes are where inlet has just closed and exhaust it about to open but both valves are closed ,then bring piston up to the tdc position ,pump set to spill time at no1 injector then you should see the correct marks ,turn engine over 360? by hand to ensure valves clear

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1.8L Engine
  1. If possible, position the engine so the No. 1 piston is at TDC.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the timing belt covers.
  4. Remove the timing (outer) belt tensioner and remove the outer timing belt.
  5. Remove the outer crankshaft sprocket and flange.
  6. Remove the silent shaft (inner) belt tensioner and remove the belt. Fig. 1: Silent shaft belt timing marks — 1.8L engine 89573g93.gif

    To install:
  7. Align the timing marks of the silent shaft sprockets and the crankshaft sprocket with the timing marks on the front case. Wrap the timing belt around the sprockets so there is no slack in the upper span of the belt and the timing marks are still aligned.
  8. Install the tensioner pulley and move the pulley by hand so the long side of the belt deflects about 1⁄4 in.
  9. Hold the pulley tightly so the pulley cannot rotate when the bolt is tigthened. Tighten the bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and recheck the deflection amount.
  10. Install the timing belt tensioner fully toward the water pump and tighten the bolts. Place the upper end of the spring against the water pump body.
  11. Align the timing marks of the camshaft, crankshaft and oil pump sprockets with their corresponding marks on the front case or rear cover. NOTE: There is a possibility to align all timing marks and have the oil pump sprocket and silent shaft out of time, causing an engine vibration during operation. If the following step is not followed exactly, there is a 50 percent chance that the silent shaft alignment will be 180 degrees off.
  12. Before installing the timing belt, ensure that the left side (rear) silent shaft (oil pump sprocket) is in the correct position as follows:
    1. Remove the plug from the rear side of the block and insert a tool with shaft diameter of 0.31 in. (8mm) into the hole.
    2. With the timing marks still aligned, the shaft of the tool must be able to go in at least 2 1/2 in. If the tool can only go in about 1 in., the shaft is not in the correct orientation and will cause a vibration during engine operation. Remove the tool from the hole and turn the oil pump sprocket 1 complete revolution. Realign the timing marks and insert the tool. The shaft of the tool must go in at least 2 1/3 in.
    3. Recheck and realign the timing mark.
    4. Leave the tool in place to hold the silent shaft while continuing.
  13. Install the belt to the crankshaft sprocket, oil pump sprocket, then camshaft sprocket, in that order. While doing so, make sure there is no slack between the sprocket except where the tensioner is installed.
  14. Recheck the timing marks' alignment. If all are aligned, loosen the tensioner mounting bolt and allow the tensioner to apply tension to the belt.
  15. Remove the tool that is holding the silent shaft and rotate the crankshaft a distance equal to 2 teeth on the camshaft sprocket. This will allow the tensioner to automatically apply the proper tension on the belt. Do not manually overtigthen the belt or it will howl.
  16. Tigthen the lower mounting bolt first, then the upper spacer bolt.
  17. To verify correct belt tension, check that the deflection at the longest span of the belt is about 1⁄2 in.
  18. Install the timing belt covers and all related items.
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.

Timing engine


I had a 2.4 L engine in a caravan and replace the water pump that was controlled by the timing belt.
I was having the same problem, I called my bother in law to help. The crank shaft has to stay perfectly timing on the low end. The cam shaft marks are set exactly one half of a tooth apart. So when looking at it, The left side cam gear mark is a half a tooth higher then the right side. Then you have to try and slip on the belt . That is the easy part. When letting go of the timing belt tensioner the marks should line up perfectly across from each other. You have to take off the belt again and make sure you keep correct tension on the crank shaft so the mark is not moving when you are putting on the belt. There is a web site call Alldata.com. The web site cost a few dollars but it willl give you a detail instructions on how to time the engine with pictures to guide you. This is the same web site the pro's use.

I hope this has been helpful.

Oh, by the way you are lucky because the engine is not an interferrence type , so you can not damage the valves at least. Since you know the oil pump is out of time , check all the spark plugs again , they are probably oil soaked .
