Its likely the rear heater-a/c unit located on the passenger side rear cargo area below the window. There are two actuators that open and close vent doors depending on the temperature you want. If the actuator doesn't work, you will get hot air or a hot/cold air mixture that makes you think the a/c doesn't work. If your front a/c works, than its most likely its an actuator problem. Don't waste money on freon charges or condensers because that's not likely the problem.

Remove the cover so that you can see the actuators (they are black triangular shaped units). Start the car up watch them when you change the temperature control. If you can see them rotate, they work.

In my case, the heater-airflow-gate that the actuator connected to was broken. If you remove the actuator (the one closest to the rear opens and closes air moving across the heater core) and you don't see anything connected to it on the underside, its likely that the cheap plastic hinge (that looks like it costs 50 cents) broke. The dealer wanted $1800 to repair it, but since I'm fairly mechanical, I took it apart and glued mine back together with epoxy. BTW If anyone knows the part number for that ******, let me know.

The actuators themselves can be replaced for about $90 each.

either the refridgerent charge is low OR the expansion valve for the rear a/c is bad. I would evacuate the system and recharge it with the right amount FIRST before trying to diagnose another problem. should be a decal under the hood for correct amount of 134a

2002 Chevy Tahoe, started with rear a/c blowing warm/hot air, then it started working again. Now both rear and front a/c blows warm/hot all the time. All speeds seem to be working in front and back....

sounds like a leak. Have your system checked for leaks and re-charged. If the system is full of refrigerant, then check the pressure switch on the compressor and the pressure switch on the accumulator (dryer). If the pressure in the system is low, these switches prevent the compressor from running to prevent damage.

I have a 2001 Tahoe and the a/c quits working in hot climates.

You need to vaccum the system down and recharge. You can rent the tools from autozone for a deposit thats fully refundable. Its very easy, if you are mechanicialy inclined.
It dosent hurt to replace your dryer and expansion valve. Hope this helps.
