Question about 1997 Toyota 4Runner

Morning startup, sometimes battery acts dead. Turn ignition key on and off 2 or 3 times and finally the engine starts. Have replaced the battery twice in 5 months, store claims I lhave a battery charging problem. Where do I go from here?l

    I found the solution, the started solenoid contacts were burnt, had to have the started replaced.

Have your alternator tested the voltage regulator may be bad. that will drain your battery.

Here is the relearn procedure which you have to perform so the new BCM will recognize your key and start the car:
For those vehicles that use a BCM, the BCM can learn the resistance value of the existing key by using the relearn process. In order for the vehicle to start, the BCM (as well as the Passkey module in other vehicles) must identify the resistor pellet in the key, then the BCM sends a password to the PCM. If this password matches the password stored in the PCM, the system enables fuel delivery. So you can see that if either the BCM or PCM are replaced, a relearn procedure is necessary. This same relearn procedure can be used if an ignition key with a different resistance value is used to replace the existing key. Before beginning the relearn, make sure there is a fully charged battery in the vehicle, and both the BCM and PCM are properly powered up and in communication with each other. Now you're ready to initiate the relearn procedure.

1. First, insert the ignition key and turn the ignition switchto the "On" position (Do not start the engine). Leave the switch on for 11 minutes. The security light may flash or be on steady during this 11 minute period. Make sure the light is no longer on or flashing before proceeding to #2 .
2. Turn the ignition switchoff for 30 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition switchto the "On" position (as in step #1) for 11 minutes again.
4. Turn the ignition switchoff for another 30 seconds.
5. Turn the ignition switchto the "On" position for 11 minutes a third time.
6. Turn the ignition switchoff for 30 seconds one final time.
7. Turn the ignition switchto the "On" position one final time and wait 30 seconds.
8. Attempt to start the engine. If the engine starts and runs normally, the relearn is complete. If the engine does not start, check for trouble codes and address them before attempting the relearn procedure again.

Won't start twice in a row. Starts/stalls.


Have the fuel system pressure checked especially after you start and stop the engine. If the system loses pressure immediately, you have a problem with loss of residual pressure caused by a check valve or equivalent.

We have a 2002 Grand Cherokee that we have just bought. Dealer installed a brand new battery because of sluggish starts. In a week the battery is acting weak again, sometimes it starts fine, other times...


I was having the same issue with my 95 GMC. I replaced the battery and alternator. It would start fine at times, at other times it would be sluggish. I finally took the starter off and had it checked. Turns out the starter was bad. When it would get hot, it would act as though the battery was dead. Replaced the starter and it has not acted up again. Have the starter checked. Replace if bad.

The starter is at fault,the contacts are bad in the starter,and it is drawing to much amps from the ignition.

You said you tightened the battery cables, did you check the other end of the negative where it bolts to the engine. When you tightened the cables you also used a battery brush and cleaned the posts and ends?

2001 chevy blazer not starting


I had this same problem with my 1997 Blazer, which required a fuel pump replacement as Nitrobike said. The sign to look for is when you get in the Blazer, turn your key forward to the accessory position, but not the start position. You should hear the fuel pump charging. It sounds like a hissing or whirring noise for about 2-3 seconds while it pumps fuel into the lines to prime the engine.

Fuel pump replacement isn't cheap, about $700-$1000.
