Question about 2001 Chrysler Town & Country

1 Answer

My 2001 Chrysler town and country's battery died from radio being left on. After we recharged it it still won't start. It will click but will start when jumpered from fuse box at pin 87 and 30. Pin 85 is not grounded. Where do I go from here?

Right, the relay was pulled at the time. The clicking is coming from the accessory relay when the key is turned to the start position.

Little more history on the troubleshooting so far.

12.8ish volts read off of pin 86 when key is turned to the start position. Jumping pins 87 and 30 initiate the starter. 85 (which from everything I've seen, is supposed to be the ground) gives me nothing. Also, (again despite everything I've read so far telling me it should be pin 85) pin 87 connects to pin 8 on the PCM. On the PCM, pin 76 connects to the Neutral Safety Switch, which also tested good.

Now, is my car for some reason wired differently than EVERYONE elses? Or should i start blaming the fusebox itself?

    ASD fuse is good,

I've been using Haynes manual, and finding other info here in there through web searches.

  • tristadron May 07, 2010

0.6ohms to the engine, and 0.3 ohms to the chassis.

  • tristadron May 07, 2010

Not getting anything. Then again, I'm not really sure if I am making good contact either. Also, since you asked earlier, and since the car was in pieces at the time, the ASD relay does not click when turning the key.

  • tristadron May 07, 2010

Which part of the ASD circuit would you recommend? Also, tried connecting the battery (via multimeter) to pin 6, and no luck.

Thanks for all the help! I'll let you know how it all turns out.

Hello! The click you are hearing sounds like the starter relay is pulling...The jumper you applied across pins 87 and 30 was done with the relay pulled; Correct? Or did you find some way to reach the pins with the relay still in place? We need to measure the voltage drop across the starter relay coil...connect a volt meter + to the Yellow lead of connector C-3 pin 3 of the power module and - to Dark Green/Orange C-3 pin 14...Turn the key to start...If you read a voltage drop across the relay it's pulling and its contacts are defective...Let me know what you find...Guru..............saailer

Hello! Also check the ASD (Automatic Shutdown relay) fuse...It is located inside the power distribution center (near the air cleaner)...Fuse is a 25A that powers the ASD...ASD pulls with key in start position...It controls the start/fuel system...Saailer

Hello! The wiring in your vehicle is the same as any other...We'll find the fault...The fact that there isn't a voltage drop from pin 85 to ground proves that the PCM is not shooting a ground at start...That signal is under control, in part, by the ASD relay...Check the ASD 25A fuse in the power distribution center located near the air cleaner...Send a comment....I'll be on-line until 11PM EDT...saailer

PS...What print are you using; Starting circuit, repair manual?

Hello! I need to be sure that there isn't a ground fault...Put your ohm meter on the X1 scale and measure the resistance from the negative battery post to the engine and the negative battery post to the chassis...Tell me what you read........saailer

Hello! Put the + voltmeter lead on PCM connector pin # 6...A Dark Green/Orange wire...Insert a paper clip into the rear of the connector to take reading...Put the - lead to ground...turn the key to start...Should read +12 volts...This tests the ASD relay lead that signals the PCM to apply a ground to the starter relay on pin 85...The output is on pin # 31...A Tan White wire that should have a ground on it to pull the starter relay...We are very close to a solution...Send a comment.......Saailer

Hello! It's looking like the ASD is the guilty part...If the paper clip is shoved in to the hilt, it's making contact...If you clip battery onto pin # 6 the car will probably start...Saailer

Hello! One final test...There should be a ground on pin #31 of that same PCM connector when you turn the key to start...If there isn't a ground, the pcm is not producing it...The signal is called the "smart start relay control"...The pcm also fires the ASD relay...It appears that the PCM is not functioning...Disconnect the batter for 10 minutes and then re-connect...check for start...

The ground on pin # 31 is essential...Look no further...It is initialized by the pcm when the key is turned to start...Also the ASD pulls ...no external device is involved just the pcm...Sadly I have to conclude that the pcm itself is defective...Take it out and have a qualified Chrysler technician test it...Good luck...
Let me know how you make out...It was a pleasure working with you, I wish everyone had the knowledge that you have....Saailer
