SOURCE: 1991 Plymouth Acclaim stalls

One of the more common problems with the 2.5L & 2.2L engines that suffered the symptoms your describing, such as, starts & runs good, then at any given time would just quit, not start, but after sitting a while, or by the time the mechanic gets to it, it starts right up, or you sit on the side of the road for 20 min. or half hour then away it goes for a while longer, then quits again down the road. There is a pick-up plate under the distributor cap & rotor, with the wiring plug coming from it. 90% of the time, it's defective, and cuts out especially, but not limited to, more often when weather is hot.

Can you check you fuel pressure? It could be the fuel injectors. Check the fuel filter as well. I suggest a crank sensor. Do you have a check engine light on? If so, get it read. If it is a sensor, it should pick it up. No need changing stuff that don't need changed. Can you get it read at Autozone? Let me know what they say. Is the pump all you changed? I am here to help. Just let me know.

Test the fuel pressure. With gauge connected to the fuel rail turn key on, listen for pump, when it stops, turnthe key off and leave gauge connected for an hour. The original reading should been 50lbs., if it drops any more than a couple of pounds the pump is bad. The M.A.P. sensor sounds like it was another item in itself.

Sluggish and stalling

Could be many things but check the simple and cheap stuff first: fuel filter, air filter, O2 sensor, or spark plugs. If that's not it the more expensive problem would be: alternator, gas pump, or maybe even something with the transmission
