Question about Mazda MPV

2 Answers

2002 mazda mpv with flashing overdrive light and a hard shifting transmission.one mecanic suggested that i should replace the transaxle range switch( bullitan:o/d flashing/mil with dtc p0706),another one suggested that i should get a good working used transmission control modual from a junk yard and have it installed instead of the original one.note:mazda dealer tryed to reflash the transmission control modual but could not because the diagnostic computer indicated that the tcm was bad.the dealer could not garrantee that replacing and flashing the tcm would solve the problem eventhough their tecnissien thinks otherwise.please i need to find out what i should do especially that i am in a situation that i cannot have the transmission rebuilt or replaced and i do not want to spend money and not have the problem fixed.

Thereare 5 possible causes for this condition.

TR switch malfunction
TR switch adjustment
Open TR switch ( it failed)
Damaged connectors or wiring
PCM malfunction

If the technician did his job he eliminated some of the options.
With that you now need to follow his advise and start replacing the first thing he suggested. There are no other options other than putting the car in another shop and paying for a second opinion. We can only guess. For us to be accurate we would need to actually see and test components in order to give our recomendation

On this new of a car you can't put used computers in because they would have to be programmed .to the individual car Plus on this new of a you prabably wouldnt find a used one

  • Susan Price May 07, 2010

I know this is about money for you but you really have no choice but to fix it with what the tech said annd buying used parts, if you can find them is not in your best interest. Thing is you still dont know for sure what the problem is so why would you waste money buying used parts.

Please rate me #1 since I know for a fact that your going to have to bite the bullit and buy new parts.

I would replace the transmission range selector switch 1st per this bulletin you refer to, this is the switch on the case of the transmission under the arm the shift cable attaches to, it is cheap, a transmission even used is very expensive, and i don't recommend ever using a used transmission in this van, to big a chance it is no good. This switch is also known as the neutral safety switch, below is the part number and price for the switch from rockauto.com, I also suggest u have a transmission repair shop drive the van and see what they think, they do this for free, Aamco is a good choice for a free inspection.
STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS Part # NS354
w/ A.T. $154.79

here is a picture of the switch

The transmission control is the LEAST likely component to cause this, in fact have never replaced one in the last 20 years. The only exception to this is a factory bulletin that requires a replacement, of which there are none I am aware of.

I have a 2002 Mazda MPV. When I start it and drive it revs really high. Sometimes i can take my foot off the gas and it will still accelerate, A LOT! Also when it does this it shifts really hard and there...

The transmission is slipping, have it checked for low fluid level, if that is ok then you need the transmission rebuilt or replaced with a factory rebuilt exchange unit.

Is the neutral switch the same as the transaxle range switch?

Yes they are the same part just different names. The neutral safety is part of the transmission/transaxle range selector combination switch.

1996 ford contour transmission range sensor

Transmission range sensor and neutral safety switch are the same thing (when you go to buy the part). It's at the top of your transmission. You'll see the shifting cable connected to it. Here are the instructions for adjustment:
Shift Control Linkage
The transmission shift linkage adjustments must be performed in the order in which they appear.

Column Shift

Place transaxle range selector lever in (D) (OVERDRIVE) position or D (DRIVE) position on vehicles equipped with a transmission control switch (TCS). A weight of 1.4 kg (3 lb) should be hung on the transaxle range selector lever to ensure the lever is located firmly on the (D) (OVERDRIVE) or D (DRIVE) position on vehicles equipped with a transmission control switch (TCS) detent.

Loosen manual control lever-to-control cable retaining nut.

Move transaxle manual control lever to OVERDRIVE position or D (DRIVE) position on vehicles equipped with a transmission control switch (TCS), second detent from most rearward position.

Tighten retaining nut to 17-23 Nm (13-17 lb-ft). Check operation of transaxle in each transmission range position. Make sure that park mechanism and transmission range (TR) sensor are functioning properly.

Floor Shift

Position transaxle range selector lever in DRIVE position against rearward stop. The floor transaxle range selector lever must be held in the rearward position using a constant force of 1.4 kg (3 lb) while linkage is being adjusted.

Loosen manual control lever-to-control cable retaining nut.

Move transaxle manual control lever to DRIVE position, second detent from most rearward position.

Tighten retaining nut to 17-23 Nm (13-17 lb-ft).

Check operation of transaxle in each transmission range position. Make sure that park mechanism and transmission range (TR) sensor are functioning properly.

To take it off, it's a couple of retaining bolts and a wiring harness.

Auto transmission will not engage in DRIVE gear when starting.

IT IS THE STRAINER INSIDE THE PAN IN THE TRANSMISSION,WHEN ITS COOL THE FLUID IS TO THICK TO TRAVEL AND GRITTY TO GO THROUGH THE STRAINER SCREEN,BUT WHEN THE TRANNY WARMS THE FLUID ITS THEN ABLE TO FLOW THROUGH THE SCREEN AND SHIFT PROPERLY.
