Question about 1997 Dodge Dakota

Not turning over. will crank. already replaced spark plugs dist cap rotor button spark plug wires ignition coil and crankshaft position sensor. im out of ideas

    have no power to the coil have fuel and it turns over already replace dist. cap and moduale any ideas

It may be out of gas. all chrysler products especially the trucks/jeeps had problems with running out of gas when the guage would say between 1/8 tank to 3/8 tank. heres how to check. open hood remove cap on fuel rail pressure check port [it looks like a tire valve cap] crank engine briefly then push the pintle in the pressure check valve[it is the same setup as a tire valve stem] if air comes out or a little fine sray and air its out of gas. if no air or gas comes out then the fuel pump isnt working. if its just out of gas you can buy a new fuel level sending unit to fix the guage.

Is it getting gas? If so then check the ignition module and before that check that power is getting to your distributor.

There will b a senser under cap.and one on coil u should be able to have tested at any auto parts store..if not ....u should have codes in memory have it scaned

That would be the ignition coil, the part that creates spark at the spark plug. If you follow the electrical path from the coil wire to the distributor cap, and from there, the spinning rotor just under the distributor cap carries the path from the coil wire at the cap's center to the spark plug wires around the dist. cap, and through the plug wire to the spark plug.
The high voltage causing the spark is created in the ignition coil by the engine computer at the precise right moment signaling an ignition module to cut 12 volts current to the ignition coil. This causes the coil to internally build up high voltage which is passed through the coil to distributor cap wire. The computer knows the precise right moment to initiate spark from engine sensors, primarily the crank position sensor and the cam position sensor.

Truck wont crank. we have put new distributor cap, rotor button, coil pack, plugs, wires, and fuel pump. we also checked our firing order.


you said you repl dist cap that means you don't have a crank sensor you have electronic ing module. remove your elec ing module have it tested most auto parts stores could test your module, or check your coil at the neg terminal. should have power. if not you lost your primary volt from your batt.your secondary power is coming from your electronic ing module from the module to the pos terminal on the coil, when the eng cranks,from the coil to the dist cap , from the dist cap center to the rotor then out to the plugs,this all happen pervided the timing belt or timing chain is ok. the cumbustion chainber needs 3 things , thats fuel, air, and spark.

My engine turns but no spark I changed ignition coil and still no spark,what could it be?


Depending on which engine your car is equipped with; the following components could be at fault.

Crankshaft Position Sensor
Camshaft Position Sensor
ECM (Engine Control Module)
Distributor Cap or Rotor
Fouled Spark Plugs
Bad Plug Wires

If they haven't been replaced in the last 30K miles, I suggest you check and /or replace the the plugs and wires first.

If your engine is equipped with a distributor, check and/or replace the distributor cap and rotor if it hasn't been replaced in the last 30k miles.

If your engine is equipped with crank or cam sensors have them tested.

NO SPARK FROM PLUGS


REMOVE DIST. CAP AND CRANK ENGINE SEE IF ROTOR TURN IF IT NOT, CHECK TIMING BELT, IF IT TURNS CHECK FOR SPARK ON DIST. CAP WHERE COIL WIRE GOES IF SPARK CHANGE OUT SPARK PLUG WIRES.IF NO SPARK CHECK IGNITION COIL AND PICK UP COIL.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee No Start


I would be thinking that there is a good chance that you need to be checking out replacing the computer, if you aren't getting any communication with the proper scan tool then the computer isn't communicating with anything in the vehicle...... I would have guessed first off that the ignition control module might be bad but that is obviously part of the computer also, I would be looking in that direction.

There may be no injector pulse if the computor does not see a RPM signal.
There will be no spark if the ignition module does not see a dist pulse from the dist pickup.......a RPM signal.
Because you do not have both ......I would suggest to check/change the dist pick up.
Follow the wires from the ignition module inside the dist to the pickup which is also inside the dist.
If it is just a bad dist pickup....keep all your old parts as good spares.
Also...is the dist turning? to provide a RPM signal?
You will have to remove the dist to change the pick-up.....mark your timing locations......"rotor position" and "dist body location"before removal.
A quick test before installing the "repaired dist" .....plug it in the the truck wiring and turn on the key....DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE OR YOU WILL LOSE YOUR DIST ROTOR CORRECT POSITION......as you spin the dist by hand .....the injectors should spray.
