This not an electrical problem, cold weather makes it worse. When it is cold you can not press the button. After it warms up it is better.

The problem is that it won't come out of park. And this is a 1997, we have had this problem for several years. It acts like the cable on mechanism is stuck. Once it warms up we can get it into drive.

Hello. using only a phillips screwdriver first remove half dozen screws and drop the under dash cover beneath the steering wheel. Above the brake pedal lever is the brake light switch...pull off two multi pin connectors then turn the whole switch quarter turn and remove.
Although the plunger moved freely and brake lights worked fine I sprayed with thin penetrating oil (WD40) and reversed the above procedure....Now my gearbox operates perfectly, took half an hour to fix and saved hundreds.

When you park the car keep your foot on the brake put it in neutral and engage the emergency brake. Then slowly remove your foot from the brake pedal making sure the emergency is holding. Now put the car in park. This should solve your problem.

Has nothing to do with electrical system. The reason it's worse in cold weather is the result of gear oil being thicker and the metal components changing size as result of temperature.

Check to see if the brake lights are working - shift interlock is the same circuit. Check the fuse.

Turn key to 1st position (unlock) move selector to neutral to start and then you should be able to shift to Drive.
