1997 Ford Explorer makes a whirring noise when driving over 35mph

I drive a 1997 Ford Explorer Automatic. 6 cylinder. 4 wheel drive. 147,000 miles. When I drive over approx 35 mph as soon as I let off the gas my rpms drop out, and a very loud whirring type noise comes from under the hood. If I hit the gas again it stops or if I brake back down to usually under 30mph. It does it every single time I go over approx 35mph. As long as I dont let off the gas it doesn't do it. It doesn't seem to have any issues switching gears. As soon as I let off the gas petal the rpms just go down to 0 instantly and the noise starts until i hit the gas again or brake down. It doesnt sound like metal grinding, its whiring/spinning type noise, like maybe something is trying to grap or catch and its not. It is very loud. The suv doesnt vibrate, lurch, rattle etc when it makes this noise. I can drive around all day and as long as I stay under 35 miles per hour it will never make the noise. Any idea? I Already Tried with a mechanic work on it. He said it was a sensor in the transmission but I don't bi live that.

Hi..my name is Keith..and i can think of 3 possible causes..the 1st one is a tire out of balance..sometime the wheel balancing weights come off...the 2nd one is that the belts in a tire is broken..and the 3rd one is..that you have a warped brake rotor..it shouldnt cost much to have a shop to look at it and fix it..i hope this has helped

Would sooner think wheel bearing, should be able to hear the noise or feel play in the bearing if jacked up. Abs light on? often a bad bearing will get metal in the sensor and turn on the ABS light also.

Does my 2003 ford explorer sport have front wheel drive, rear wheel drive or all wheel drive. my email is kmmock1@gmail.com

it is most likely an automatic awd, 4 hi is full time 4 wheel drive, 4 lo is full time 4 wheel drive but at a very low gear ratio and should not exceed 25 mph or could cause damage. and DO NOT shift into 4 lo while vehicle is in motion. Auto is a 2 wheel drive but automatically engages into 4 wheel drive under heavy acceleration.

My 2000 Explorer makes a whirring sound when you accelerate - can this noise be due to a bent tierod? The previous owner had an accident involving the front end and was told that the tierod was haywire?

Typcially tie rods will only make a clunking noise or a squeak. The whirring sound if would suspect to be a wheel bearing. When you drive, slowly turn from left to right, if the pitch changes than its the bearing.

Do you have it switched to 4 wheel low? If not it indicates a problem with the 4 wheel drive sustem. Take it to a mechanic for proper diagnosis.

Transmission or transfer case noise

I have the same problem with my 94 explorer with a manual transmission, Just replaced the trans a month ago because of gear failure and now It's slipping out of gear when the engine isn't under load aka Coasting, was Told By a Really good Trans Guy that this is a failure in the Linkage in the transfer case am about to tear into mine tho It's way over my technical ability but will repost here after I get it torn apart with potential prices for worn parts for the do it yourselfer, And Has to be the issue I hope because the gears in the transmission are in pristine condition the other reason for suspecting the transfer case is that when my trans is slipping and making that weird Rattle Clatter sound coming from the trans if I put it in 4x4 low it drives great even tho the front wheels aren't pulling since I have the front drive shaft off at the moment,, Well Here goes Nothing Wish me luck on this teardown gonna need it..
