Question about Volkswagen Jetta

Battery is good but starter is not kicking when the ignition key is turn on. How can I repair the starter? If repairable, what do I need to change? I apppreciate any assistance. Jaime

Lots of possibilities.
If the battery terminals are at all dirty or corroded, this is a common result. Make sure they are shiny and greased.
If the ignition switch is not burned up, then you should at least hear the starter solenoid click.
If you do not, it may be the switch.
Put a test light on the starter soleniod small wire, to see if it lights up with an attempt to start.
If it clicks, then it could be just the soleniod and not the whole starter.
If the voltage does not drop enough, then the solenoid may not be powering the starter armature. The lights should dim, and the voltage should drop to about 10, from 12.5.
If it drops to 9 or below, then either the engine is siezed, or the starter is shorted internally.
Starters are cheap at salvage yards, and the same for many, many years and models. However, sticks and autos tend to have different starters.

Could be something as simple as a solenoid for your starter it allows power to pass thru to the starter
pull out starter and connect power from batery to starter (bypass solenoid) if starter turns then replace solenoid

Where is fuse for startermoter


There may be a fuse for the ignition system, but not specificly the Starter itself. Do you hear a "click" when you turn the key? If not
are you sure you have a good battery? Do other electric devices work? If you hear a click when turning to start and a good battery, You have starter solenoid problems. Is this a diesel? Could be the Starter motor Brushes. While somewhat hazardous, can you jump the car and get it started? Autoparts stores will help check battery and other electrical problems if you want to do it yourself. Otherwise you need dealer or reputable repair shop. If diesel engine (and fuel) I'd go to the dealer.

Basic operation of a starter:
Your engine's starter motor is an electrical motor that is used to rotate the engine in order to get it to fire up. This motor draws a large amont of current from the battery (in the order of 70 Amps and up). In order to supply power to the starter a solenoid is used, it acts as a switch between the battery and the starter motor. This solenoid also engages the starter gear with the engine's flywheel and disengages it once the engine is started. Because the circuit for the solenoid also draws a heavy current a further relay is needed to control it.
The diagram below shows the electrical layout of the starting system.
  • i : Battery
  • ii : Starter relay(located in the relay box in the engine compartment)
  • iii : Starter solenoid
  • iv : Starter incorporating solenoid and motor.
  • v : Engine
  • vi : Battery earth cable
  • vii : Engine earth cable
  • viii : Ignition fuse
  • ix : Starter fuse
  • x : Solenoid to starter supply cable
  • xi : Ignition switch
  • xii : Starter motor
When the ignition(xi) is turned it supplies power from the battery through fuse (viii) to the starter relay(ii).
The starter relay activates and supplies power to the starter solenoid(iii) via fuse (ix)
The starter solenoid activates and connects power from the battery to the starter via a short cable(x) between the solenoid and starter motor. This allows the starter motor to turn.

General trouble shooting.
Turn the ignition off.
1/ First you need to check that the fuses are intact.
Keep the ignition off. Place the vehicle in Neutral. Chock the wheels and engage the parking brake.
2/ To prove the starter motor, connect power from the battery positive to the cable (x). This must be done with jumper cables. Touch the jumper cable to the connector on the back of the solenoid where cable (x) connects. Take care not to short circuit the jumper cable to the engine or vehicle body. It can be a tight fit and might not always be possible. If you hear the starter motor spin then it is working along with the engine earth cable. If not, connect the negative lead of the jumper cable between the battery and the starter motor body or any other bare piece of metal on the engine and put the positive lead on cable (x) again. If the starter motor does not spin it needs to come out for repair/replacement. If it spins check both the battery earth cable and engine earth cable and repair where nescasary.
3/ Once the starter motor has been proved move on to the solenoid. Remove the thin wire from the solenoid. Using a small piece of wire, connect battery positive to the connector where you just took off the wire. The solenoid should kick in and the starter motor will turn the engine. If the solenoid does not kick in, remove the starter for repair/replacement of the solenoid. If the solenoid kicks in then replace the starter relay.

If the starting circuit still does not operate the fault will be in the wiring. This needs reasonable expertise and if you dont have a voltmeter handy is not advised.
Bear in mind on automatic transmission vehicles there is an additional switch (Mode switch) wired in between the ignition switch and the starter relay. This switch is on the transmission itself and if faulty will not allow the starter to operate even if steps 1 to 3 were successfull. The same goes for the anti theft/immobiliser system.

You hooked it up wrong . Is there power at the purple wire all the time ?
ignition the starter was (winding ) ???as soon as I reconnected the battery. The starter cranks the engine !It's really called a cranking motor not starter . Do you know where that comes from ? Before electric starters you cranked the engine by hand . Suggest you take it to a qualified repair shop.

I pulled the starter,alternator & battery they all checked good and ity still wont turn over what could it be?


If you can hear the starter click or engage when you try to start . Either the battery has low voltage or the engine has seized. You can check the engine by putting a wrench on the crank pulley bolt and try to turn by hand.Make sure to disconnect the battery first. If the engine turns it's good. If the starter is making a loud grinding noise but does'nt turn the engine. It's your flywheel/flexplate. Also make sure your battery connections are clean and tight for proper voltage delivery. I'm not sure if your car would have a fuse or power relay for the starter,but it might be worth checking out. If you do not hear a click from the starter when you turn the key it could be a short in the ignition switch.Not the key tumbler,the electrical switch is behind the ignition key tumbler. Hope this helps. Other than this you may need a repair manual to trace the wiring of the starting system and fusable links.

How to change a starter in a 1990 cadillac sedan deville?


First, I would determine it is bad. I have a 1990 Cadillac Sedan Deville, and sometimes it doesn't turn over. But, if I toggle the switch a few times or up to 5 times, it starts to turn over and the car starts.

I have the same problem with a 1997 Cadillac Deville.

If you are set on changing it, here is a picture and instructions on how to test:

NOTE: The battery must be in good condition and fully charged prior to performing this test.
  1. Disable the ignition system by unplugging the coil pack. Verify that the vehicle will not start.
  2. Connect a voltmeter between the positive terminal of the battery and the starter B+ circuit.
  3. Turn the ignition key to the START position and note the voltage on the meter.
  4. If voltage reads 0.5 volts or more, there is high resistance in the starter cables or the cable ground, repair as necessary. If the voltage reading is ok proceed to the next step.
  5. Connect a voltmeter between the positive terminal of the battery and the starter M circuit.
  6. Turn the ignition key to the START position and note the voltage on the meter.
  7. If voltage reads 0.5 volts or more, there is high resistance in the starter. Repair or replace the starter as necessary. NOTE: Many automotive parts stores have starter bench testers available for use by customers. A starter bench test is the most definitive way to determine the condition of your starter.

Remember to disconnect the battery and remove the wires from the starter at the hex nut.

Then, remove the 3 or so bolts that hold the starter on using an extension and ratchet if necessary.

1993 Dodge Dakota repairs. Battery is charged and new when I turn the ignition switch to start there is a click click click click Etc the engine wont turn over. What can I do? Thank You!!!


I have a 93 dodge dakota pick up. When I turn the key I get nothing, The radio and the lights work fine. I had starter checked and the battery changed, It will run if you push it to start but not with the key.

I just replaced the timing belt on my 03 Jetta TDI, now there is no sound at all when I try to turn it over. Had the battery tested, it's fine.


Check your starter lead at the starter?

You can check for 12 volts there with a multitester and then you can jump the starter direct and see if it turns over without involving the ignition key or related circuits.

If you had your battery disconnected during this repair maybe the ecu needs to be rekeyed to your security keys code? You would have to check with VW on this one for specific procedures.

Ignition on jeep yj will not start engine. all


Before blaming the starter make sure the battery is fully charged. It should be around 13V.
Starter circuits for the most part operates in the following way. Turning the ignition key supplies power to a relay situated in the engine compartment which in turn activates the solenoid on the starter which powers the starter itself.
Make sure your vehicle is in Neutral(Manual gearbox) or Park(Auto box) Locate the starter motor. On the starter there is another cylinder like object called the solenoid. There is a thick red wire running from the battery connected to this. There is also a much thinner wire which activates the solenoid. To test the starter run a wire from the + on the battery to where the thin wire connects on the solenoid. (ignition must be off) This should activate the starter and turn the engine. If nothing happens the starter is probably at fault. Before removing the starter make sure that the engine is properly earthed as this could also give problems.
If the starter does kick in the problem is further "upstream" Most probable cause would be the relay. If you can locate it, replace since it is relatively cheap.
Starter repair is best left to the experts. Get a quote for a new starter before you have the old one repaired. You'd be surprised at how many times it turns out that replacement costs the same as repair.

A little clarification: the starter relay and starter solenoid are the same piece of equipment -- just different names for the same device.
