Question about 1998 Mercury Tracer

2 Answers

The car dies when accelerator is released, some times. I acts like the fuel is shut off. Then restarts after a couple pumps on the foot pedal. Initially it did it consistantly every stop sign. Now it less frequent but still happens. If its possibly a relay where is it located?

Before you go into any expensive repairs, check the fuel filter and fuel pump.

My car turns over good, acts like it might turn on then continues to turn. I figure it might be fuel filter since low fuel light had come on.Or could it be th fuel pump got hot and is not working properly?

common problem is turning car off with engine not reaching normal operating temp and floods engine. try this. DE-CHOKING PROCEDURE WHEN ENGINE CRANKS BUT DOES NOT START
If the engine does not start, try the following procedure to start the engine using the de-choke mode.
Failure to do so may aggravate the no start condition.
1. Depress and hold the accelerator pedal to the floor and crank the engine for 7-8 seconds. (This will clean out any unburned fuel from the combustion chamber)
2. Release the ignition key to stop cranking.
3. Release the accelerator pedal and start the engine. If the engine starts while performing Step 1 the engine will rev up. Immediately release the ignition key to stop cranking and remove your foot from the accelerator pedal.
^ Do not keep holding the ignition switch in the START position over 10 seconds if the engine does not start. This may result in a weakened or dead battery.
^ Avoid racing the engine or sudden take off right after starting the engine.
^ If the engine still fails to start following the De-choking procedure, have your vehicle inspected by your Mazda Dealer.

for your info there is a recall for this problem. contact mazda.

Check the fuel pressure regulator.
by starting the car with your foot on the accelerator pedal half the way if it starts and continue running while you are holdining yore foot on and stops as soon as you take it off the accelerator .
then change the fuel pressure regulator it is located under hood in the rear side at top of the engine.

Car stalls when stopped, cuts out when accelerating to HWY spds.

You could have a bad or intermittent fuel pump. Not a cheap thing to have.

An OBD 2 scanner can read fuel pressure on the drive to see if your fuel pressure drops off at odd times to confirm. It can also tell if there are transcient vacuum leaks at idle which the engines idle air control cant compensate for.

Do the plugs, wires and cap too.

1993 lumina 3.1 dies going down the road, but starts again

Did you check the pressure with the vacuum hose to the regulator (if applicable) disconnected? Try driving the veh with the press gauge taped to the windshield. Got to replace the gas filter every three years or 30,000 miles or they clog up. The fuel pump armature may be worn and binding up. (new pump) It may just work okey but no volume. Now we go to the TPS. Throttle Position Sensor. Need a digital volt meter or scope to look at it. Worn or out of adjustment. Don't have the car here so it's not easy assume anything. You need too know the systems on a brand of veh and follow a flow chart of likely causes you develop over the years and keep notes for the next vehicle challange.

WELL, THEIRS A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT COULD BE WRONG, FIRST YOU DIDN'T SAY IF IT IS CRANKING OVER AND JUST NOT FIRING OR DEAD COMPLETELY, SO IF ITS CRANKING SIT IN THE CAR WITH RADIO OFF WINDOWS UP AND LISTEN CLOSELY TURN KEY ON TO THE RUN POS. LISTEN YOU SHOULD HEAR THE FUEL PUMP TURN ON FOR APPROX. 3 SECONDS IT WILL MAKE A BUZZING SOUND THIS IS NORMAL IF YOU DON'T HEAR THAT YOU MAY HAVE A BAD FUEL PUMP IF YOU STILL ARE UN-SURE REMOVE AIR CLEANER DUCT TO WERE IT CLAMPS ON TO ENGINE AT THROTTLE BODY YOU HAVE TO HAVE ANOTHER PERSON TO DO THIS HAVE FRIEND SIT IN CAR BEFORE THEY CRANK ENGINE HAVE PERSON HOLD GAS PEDAL DOWN THE PLATE IN THE THROTTLE BODY WILL BE VISIABLE WERE YOU REMOVED AIR CLEANER HOSE SPRAY A SMALL BURST OF STARTING FLUID INTO THEIR AND RELEASE FOOT FROM PEDAL NOW TELL ASST. TO CRANK OVER IF IT STARTS THEN QUICKLY DIES YOU HAVE A BAD FUEL PUMP.. HOPE THIS HELPS...

Engine wont idle unless you keep your foot on the gas pedal

First, try a new accelerator pump. They're less than $10 and easy to install. On the side of the carburator, near the linkage. It's simple a small rubber diaphragm.
