Question about 1994 Chevrolet Corvette

1 Answer

I own a 1994 Corvette. My ex took both sets of keys in the river and I cannot find any place or any one that can give me the key codes. GM said they do not hold them in their computer after 15 years. Do I have to replace the doors locks and ignition, and the hatchback locks?

Is There a way I could measure the Resistance of a Ignition key on my 1989 corvette to order A spare key. they are asking for a Code 1-15.The dealership wants $100.00 That's Expensive.

Yes. On the key you will see a chip. It is surrounded by black plastic that holds it to the key. Use an OHM meter and put the leads to each side of the resistor/chip/key. This gives the resistance. But i would unplug the ignition wire(under the dash) and put a resistor in it's place. A hundred dollar key, compared to 2 dollars.

Security system reset

You may need to check the owners manual for a Corvette. Most GM models can be set by leaving the key in the on position for a few minutes with the engine off, or by locking and unlocking the drivers door with the key.

How do I get replacment ignition and door keys for my 1989 Corvette?

Any hardware store can duplicate keys, lock smith in your area, big box store (the home improvement kind).

Should be pretty simple ... in my area it costs about $2.00 to duplicate a key.

It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. 1st trick, Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down and so do the keys causing security fail. 2nd trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shutting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix... If anything on this page helps you, please remember to comment or give me a thumbs up on the myfixya sight so i can have a better rating to help more people on this. Thanks

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.

Security light flashes, and car want start, except bye the starter, and suddenly stops.

Depending on the year of vehicle how the security system works (you didn`t specify year or model). Older models up to 1997 use passlock I, they have a chip in the shaft of the key, and usually break in the steering column just behind the ignition key cylinder. You will need to know the code number of the key, and will have to order a new ignition cylinder and new keys. After 1997 its passlock II which has the chip inside the head of the key. It learns the code of the key and ensures its the correct key every time you start the car. The most likely problem with this system is the passlock sensor in the ignition switch. Try turning key to run (do not crank) leave key on for 10 minutes, the security light should be flashing. When it stops flashing or goes solid (after 10 min relearn) try to start again. If starts you will need the passlock sensor soon. It probably has a trouble code set in the BCM (body control computer).
