My 1999 montero diesel has a hard time starting in the mornings, but runs fine after first starting up. Is there a special procedure for cold start up?

When is the last time you replace the glow plugs? That could be your problem. Also the fuel injector pump should be checked for pressure. Either of the two can be a problem. It is costly to rebuild the fuel injector pump but I find that the motors runs like new if the pump is weak then rebuilt.

Could be down to your heater plugs or heater plug relay both under the bonnet. Other item to check, could be a feul pump going bad or dirty filter injectors but im not sure. Diesel engien are so hard to understand.

It sounds like the sendary or low volume pump is not working when cold ! Its also possible that the primary pump is doing the same thing ! There are updates on parts to move or consolidate both pumps ! Basically when you first start your truck your running on the fuel thats already in the fuel housing and then it runs out or low due to insuffecient supply !

very normal with a 7.3 to be hard starting at lower temps the only thing i can recommend is getting a remote start with cold start where it starts it every 2 hours and runs it for 10 mins other than that you need to plug it in

For a short term solution, you could run a small electric heater within the engine compartment which will keep everything nice and warm for your early morning starts.
I remember my father using an extension trouble light and leaving it under the engine compartment during the winters.

F-350 turbo-diesel hard starting

Imagine the white smoke is unburnt diesel. Anybody standing in the middle of it will be able to tell you soon enough.

Most likely culprit is that one or two of the glow plugs aren't getting hot enough. Usually just that the plugs need replacing, but worth checking first that the busbar which runs between them all is getting +12V at the appropriate stage of the process.
