Yes, you'll at least need to lower the gas tank to get the line disconnected from the pump fitting on top of the tank.

How to change the fuel filter

Fuel Filter The filter should be inspected for external damage and/or leakage at least once a year. The fuel filter should be changed only as necessary. Toyota Motor Corporation recommends replacing the carbureted fuel filters at 15,000 miles and 30,000 miles on fuel injected models. NOTE: Fuel lines and connections, fuel tank vapor vent system hoses and fuel tank bands should be inspected every 60,000 miles or every 36 months. The fuel tank cap gasket should be replaced 60,000 miles or every 72 months.
---
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Carbureted Engines The fuel filter on carbureted engines is a plastic cylinder with two ports for the fuel. It is usually located in the engine compartment near the charcoal canister.
  1. Using a pair of pliers, expand the hose clamp on one side of the filter, and slide the clamp further down the hose, past the point to which the filter pipe extends. Remove the other clamp in the same manner. Grasp the clamps and slide them up the hose slightly above the filter ends 88271p10.jpg

  2. Grasp the hoses near the ends and twist them gently to pull them free from the filter pipe. Slide the hose off the end of the fuel filter end 88271p11.jpg

  3. Pull the filter from the clip and discard. Be carefull when removing the filter, some fuel may spill out if not held upright 88271p12.jpg
    To install:
  4. Install the new filter into the clip. The arrow must point towards the hose that runs to the carburetor.
  5. Push the hoses onto the filter pipes, then slide the clamps back into position.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.
Fuel Injected Engines 1993-97 MODELS
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding with working on the fuel system. This will depressureize the fuel system. The fuel filter can be hard to locate on these engines 88271pa1.jpg

Fig. 5: Disconnect the negative battery cable prior to all fuel system repairs 88271g03.gif
    CAUTION
Failure to depressurise the fuel system could cause personal injury.
  2. Disconnect the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor wiring.
  3. Loosen the air cleaner hose clamp bolt, the disconnect the four air cleaner cap clips. Fig. 6: Loosen the air cleaner hose clamp bolt 88271g04.gif

  4. Spearate the air cleaner hose from the throttle body, and remove the air cleaner cap together with the air cleaner hose.
  5. Disconnect the EVAP canister hose from the charcoal canister. Fig. 7: Remove both EVAP hoses from the charcoal canister 88271g05.gif

  6. Remove the charcoal canister from the bracket.
  7. Place a suitable container or shop towel under the fuel filter. Remove the union bolt and two gaskets, then slowly disconnect the fuel inlet hose from the fuel filter outlet. Fig. 8: Remove the union bolt and two gaskets from the fuel filter, then disconnect the inlet hose from the filter 88271g06.gif

  8. Using a special wrench 09631-22020 or equivalent, disconnect the inlet pipe from the fuel filter. Remove the two bolts and the filter from the vehicle. Fig. 9: Using a special tool, disconnect the inlet pipe from the fuel filter 88271g07.gif
Fig. 10: Remove the two filter mounting bolts, then separate the filter from the vehicle 88271g08.gif
    To install:
  9. Install the fuel filter with the two bolts and tighten them to 43 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  10. Using the special wrench 09631-22020 or equivalent, connect the inlet pipe to the fuel filter. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm). Using a torque wrench, tighten with a fulcrum length of 11.81 inch (30cm). Install the fuel inlet hose to the filter outlet using new gaskets and union bolt. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs. 30 Nm). Fig. 11: Install the filter inlet hose to the filter outlet, then tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm) 88271g09.gif

  11. Install the charcoal canister to the bracket. Connect the two EVAP hoses to the canister.
  12. Connect the air cleaner hose to the throttle body. Install the air cleaner cap together with the air cleaner hose.
  13. Attach the IAT sensor wiring.
  14. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for leaks. Reset any various digital equipment such as radio memory and the clock if necessary.

Gas is shooting from inside of gas tank over muffler, when you try and start dodge caravan

Sounds like one of the lines from the fuel pump is leaking. They come attached to the fuel filter. Replace the fuel filter.

Gas leaken new tank 94 4 runner think its fuel pump seal but dont wanna drop tank if dont have to found axcess pannel under rear passenger seat but dont see fuel pump to see if thats where its leaking from...

If the smell is coming from the back of the vehicle then it could be leaking from the return line or the filler hose. I would check the fuel filler hose first since you can probably get at it wihtout dropping the tank. You might be able to get to the return line as well which is a small hose that goes to the tank from the fuel pressure regulator to return unused fuel. If the smell is coming from the front of the vehicle I would inspect all of the fuel lines and the inline fuel filter if you have one installed and verify that none of the hose is damaged and all clamps are tight. Check your injector rail and make sure it is not leaking where it provided fuel to the injectos and check your injectors seat to see if there is any evidence of fuel leakage.

If you can't find any leaks in those locations then you are gonna have to drop the tank and check the pump.

Fuel filters possibly blocked where are they located

Hi,

CAUTION
If equipped with an Electronic Fuel Injected (EFI) engine, you must first release the fuel system pressure, before removing the fuel filter.

The fuel filter on all models is a disposable plastic unit, located at the rear of the engine compartment. The filter should be replaced at least every 24,000 miles (38,647 km). A dirty filter will starve the engine and cause poor running.

It's the little one, in this diagram:

9eb47e8.gif
Locate the fuel filter on the left (driver's) side of the engine compartment. Place a container under the filter to catch the excess fuel.
  1. Loosen the hose clamps, then disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses from the fuel filter. Make certain that the inlet hose (bottom) doesn't fall below the fuel tank level or gasoline will drain out.
  2. Pry the fuel filter from its clip and replace the assembly.
  3. Position new hose clamps, if necessary, then connect the inlet and outlet lines. Make sure that the closest edge of each hose clamp is 1⁄8 in. (3mm) from the end of the hose before tightening. NOTE: Ensure that the screw does not contact adjacent parts.
  4. Start the engine and check for leaks

Monster fuel leak

if the gas is leaking from the top of the tank, 10 to 1 it's either the fuel line, or the top part of the sending unit which is probably made of plastic, is cracked where the fuel line connects to.The tank should be empty or near it, easier to drop, loosen the tank strap bolts towards the front, then remove the rear ones one at a time, as you take the last rear bolt out, the tank should drop a little. Becarful of the wire connection and fuel line, drop it slowly enough to reach in and disconnect them.If the unit has a plastic hose connection, it needs replacing. good luck.

94 MX-6 Starting issue

You may have a fuel pump issue or pressure relief problem Try squeezing the fuel return line/hose with the appropriate tool so you dont damage the hose and see if thiers any improvement as it could be bypassing back to the fuel tank. Also are the air box /air filter and associated inlet tubes tight with no leaks or splits. If the inlet system is leaking it upsets the air flow meter and acts like a vacuum leak.you are right as it could also be a vacuum leak
