May be a bad starter??
May be a bad flywheel??
May be a thrown connecting rod???
There are way too many things involved here to test, if you are a novice I advise you seek the knopwledge of a professional in the end it may save you $$$$ on buying electrical parts that donot solve the problem and once electical components are purchased you cannot return them for money back.

Grinding of front brakes on a 98 Ford escort. What does it mean and what is the cost for the possible repairs

You need a front brake job based on what your discription.
The grinding noise indicates you've worn through the pads and more than likley have damaged the rotors.
It will run approx. $250.00 to have it done by a professional, or do it yourself in the $100.00 range.

My escort gti 98 is making a noise like a dry bearing round the top cams, only when engine is hot. help!!

Remove valve cover and to see if it look oily if it does more then likely that's not the noise. I would remove the upper timing belt cover and check the timing belt idler pulley bearing.

No, what they are tlakign aobut is an exhaust brake, escorts do not have a such thing, if your hearing a grinding, it means you have a busted motor mount.
