Question about 1998 Mitsubishi Montero Sport

I removed the starter had it checked, Icharged the battery for 24

I removed the starter had it checked, reinstalled the battery an tried to crank the engine all I got was a click. Could be caused by a blown fuse?

2000 expedition no crank


try to turn the motor over by hand. If you can't. Remove the serpentine belt and you'll most likely find a frozen alternator or water pump or something.

What could cause a 96 ford pickup not to start it make a single clunk when trying to start, isn't starter or relay what else can I try?


Could be a lack of juice such as a loose wire, a bad ground or bad battery. Are you sure the motor is free? Try grabbing the belts and moving the motor over a little bit-maybe the starter teeth are bound up. May have to remove and reinstall to get unstuck. Did you use the same shims that came out? Hope this helps.

How to take out the starter?


REMOVE KEY FROM IGNITION!!!!!! (SAFETY FIRST!!!!) UNHOOK..AND REMOVE THE BATTERY! DO NOT attempt this with the battery IN car..way too many things to go wrong.
Remove the battery and tray.

LOOK to the REAR of the engine,you'll see the TOP of the starter.. Loosen and remove the 14MM bolt/nut holding it on now down below

Drain radiator and Remove the lower radiator hose. This will let you squeeze the starter around the AC line.

THEN install the new starter,the one bolt you removed from the bottom,screw in the LAST 14MM bolt on the starter into the transmission LOOSELY!!!!!!!

GO up top,reinstall the TOP bolt,TIGHTEN THIS ONE FIRMLY,but NOT all the way... Go below,tighten the bottom bolt to final spec. RE-ATTACH ALL THE WIRES...make sure the trigger wire is snapped in fully. GO up top,FIRMLY tighten to spec the top bolt.. Re-install everything you removed up top then down below Reinstall the battery(MAKE SURE THE IGNITION IS OFF!!!!!) Hook up battery...

LOOK AT EVERYTHING...see if ANYTHING is loose.. CHECK EVERY BOLT YOU TOUCHED TO SEE THAT IT IS TIGHT, MAKE SURE ALL WIRES ARE IN PLACE... Crank it...Does it crank?? it should fire MUCH better then when you started....good luck..

My 1994 Chevrolet C1500 will not start


check the fuseable links, some are at the starter and some may be by alternator and some by the battery, it sounds like they may have over heated and brunt, also a test to do before check links, take a test light and have someone crank the key and hold it. while you check for power at the big and small wires to starter, if it has power at both then the starter is your problem.hope this helps,

I try to start my car. All the lights comes on so I know that the battery is good. But the starter isn't engaging.


Fords use starter trelays and generally mount them on the left fender under the hood.If you follow the batt+ cable it will take you straight to it.Find a jumper cable and touch the cable from the battery to the cable on the other side of the relat.your mototor will crank. Then, with some in the car, have that person attenpt to crank and start.. If syll nothing, Jump the pterminal from the battery yo the little post on the relay. That little wire comes from your key. zwhen you jump it, have the ignition on and in park. If still nothing, check the negative battery cable. Remove, clean and reinstall snugly

Crankshaft pulley frozen belt will not move, just replaced the alt and battery. year 1998


It does sound like the eng. is locked up. You might try removing the starter and check to see if the engine will turn over with the starter off. I have seen the starter drive get stuck. Just reinstall the starter if the crank turns and it should be OK. It worked for me...

Turn key and nothing,checked battery ,rebuilt starter?


probably dirty connection on the battery.The headlights should come on bright, then dim only slightly when the starter engages.
Remove the battery cables and clean all corrosion off the terminals and connectors. The lead must be bright and shiny to make a good connection. Once you have checked and fixed the battery connections, and still no crank, find the starter relay and tap it firmly ,then try again. Still no crank, manually jump across the relay to 'force' current to the starter solenoid. Still no crank--replace the solenoid

Reinstall of Starter 1998 2.4L Chev Cavalier

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the electrical connections from the back of the starter.
  4. Remove the bell-housing cover.
  5. Remove the starter support bracket bolt from the engine block.
  6. Unfasten the starter motor-to-engine bolts, then carefully lower the starter.
  7. Remove the nuts/bolts that hold the starter support bracket to the starter.

To install:
  1. Transfer the starter support bracket to the new starter if the starter is being replaced.
  2. Raise the starter into position and secure the starter using the starter motor-to-engine bolts. Tighten the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  3. Install the starter support bracket-to-engine bolt to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
  4. Install the bell-housing cover.
  5. Install the starter electrical connections on the back of the starter. Tighten the S terminal to 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm) and the battery terminal to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  6. Carefully lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery cable.

Turn on key. power to gauges and lights. will not crank starter. removed starter and load tested . checks out ok. reinstalled starter worked for a week same thing. removed starter same thing . reinstalled...


After I was able to diagnose that the new starter I first received was defective, I reinstalled the old starter that the store checked and claimed was good. It finally acted up while I had the car on the ramps. The old starter was starting as desired when finally on one key turn, it failed to turn over. After checking I had the power to the solenoid, I gave it a tap on the solenoid and the starter began to crank again. In shopping for replacement starters, I've found out that performance data in the box doesn't mean the starter will be functional. Many that I looked at were missing the water drain debris plugs. Some were even broken in the box, and one store tried to pass it off saying it was remanents from another starter since that company reused boxes. And in-store checks for starters are only as good as the people running it. I took the same starter in twice, and got two different results (good and horribly bad).

needs a battery but be careful cause sometimes a bad alternater will cause the battery to go bad
