This sounds like a bad connection or a bad VSS sensor... either way it needs replacement/repair.. if the tach sends 0 info to the ECM the car will quit or run in an open loop causing it to run real poor... have someone like Auto Zone??? scan it for free and give you the computer code results.... this will help you unravel the mystery of the stalling.

my guess is that since you hit a bump in the road that its possible that a plug has come loose from the back of the dash.. remove instrument cluster and inspect for loose or broken wiring and connectors..

2005 dodge durango driving down the road,

Are you actually hearing the engine speed change as well when this happens, or just seeing the tach needle make crazy readings??

If only the tach is being funky, then I would say a speed sensor on the tranny is on its way out. There is also a speed sensor on the rear axle of some Durangos that can cause this issue.
