Take it back and get your $50 back and save yourself the trouble. It will just break again. You can replace the tiny spring on the shifter assembly in the console. You will need to remove all the plastic covers to get to it but the small pink lever on the drivers side of the assebly is most likely missing the spring and the tiny hook has broken off. You can drill a small hole in the pink lever and reattach a new spring. The tiny hook doesn't hold up.
Removal:
1. Remove the shifter knob - Pull straight up while rocking side to side.
2. Pull the plastic shinny cover that blinds you all the time staight up. You won't break it by pulling up on it. It just snaps in. Might need a credit card or small screw driver to get ahold of it.
3. Use a small screwdriver to unsnap the PRNDL covers.
4. Remove the coin tray by unsnapping it as well.
5. Pull the outer grey console cover(surrounds the shifter assembly and coin tray) out and toward you. It just unsnaps. You wont break it either.
6. Unbolt the 4 nuts that hold the assebly to the floor
7. Look for the pink levers - one on each side. The passenger side one will move when applying the break releasing the shifter if the solenoid is good. If this one was bad you could have used the override to release it. See owners manual. The drivers side one should have a small spring attached. If it is missing than the small hook has broken off. You can pull back on it while attempting to shift out of park.
8. Replace this spring - I drilled a small hole in the hot pink drivers side lever and attached a new spring. It attaches to another small black hook a few inches back on the left side. You will need to rock the assebly on the side a bit (not much room) but you should be able to see this hook where it used to be attached.

You have to remove the whole center console which is the hard part then everthing else is pretty straight forward.

  1. Remove console bezel.See: Center Console Bezel - Removal.
  2. Remove shift knob and shift bezel See: Console Shifter Bezel - Removal.
  3. Remove two screws (8) in the front of the console.
  4. Remove four screws (5) inside the console compartment.
  5. Disconnect console housing wire connector (5) and instrument panel connector (1).
  6. Pull parking brake (3) rearward.
  7. Remove center console (7) from vehicle

SOURCE: 2008 Dodge Avenger. Cannot shift gear out of

Try the override - remove cup holder rubber liner and stick your finger in the hole to depress the button. See owners manual.
If this doesn't work than your tiny spring has come off the broken hook on the shifter assembly. Replace it by drilling a small 1/16th hole in the pink lever and reattach a new spring. better than a new one with the cheap tiny hook that keeps breaking.

First thing to do is check and see if the brake lights work, the brake lights power the release solenoid so you can move the gear selector from part to the desired gear.

Why doe's a 2008 dodge avenger shug when it put in gear

I'm not certain what SHUG means. Can you offer a better description?

It is normal for there to be a slight bump when shifting from park to drive, especially when very cold. Something I do that helps is to shift from park to neutral and wait a few seconds before shifting to drive. That seems to ease the process of shifting to drive. Also, check the fluid when the engine is warm and idling in Park. If low, add only the necessary amount.

Car is parked in my garage. It will start but not shift out of park.

caused by a gear-shift allinement, but should be covert by waranty.
P.S. Temp. solution is to turn your vehicle off, jiggle you gear shift and restart, which should allow you to change gears again.

2008 Dodge Avenger. Cannot shift gear out of

first thing I check is if the brake lights work.

a trick that works on some cars is turn the key to one notch before "run", shift into neutral and start. then take it to the dealer, it's under warranty, right?

My 2008 Dodge Avenger will not shift from Park. Is this a manufac

I had the same thing happen to my care about a week ago. I had to replace the shifting mechanism. I bought the part and replaced it myself. Would of cost 600 dollars at the dealership. It is covered under the warrenty if you're under 36,000 miles.

My dodge avenger 2008 is stuck in park and will not shift out

There's a saftey cable attached to the brake. If that breaks or gets messed up you will not be able to get it out of park. There might be a key slot in the console, insert the ignition key, & try to move the gear shift. If you can get to neutral,it'll start & you can get it to a qualified shop, without a tow bill.
