Question about 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier
The latch needs to be greased or it is out of align. Was it ever shut with something in it? Like a jacket? Then it could be the latch bent a little bit. It kinda works like scissor action. While lid open. Work the latch open and closed see if it works freely. And look for freshly scraped off paint on it and latch on car. It will show you where it is rubbing when it didnt used to be. Just adjust it opposite way.
