Transmission making loud grinding/sucking sound, doesn't go when in drive or reverse

Is it an automatic John? When was the last time you checked the level of your ATF (automatic transmission fluid)?

There are many different types, so make sure you get the right one.

If it is a manual shift, check the gearbox oil level. If that is OK, you need a transmission specialist. Look in Yellow Pages.

2004 Ford Escape loud grinding noise, power steering stiff and belt covered w oil like substance?

Sounds like the power steering pump has failed.
You could take the serpentine belt off and check the pump pulley.

TAPPING NOISE, NOW IT WON'T GO INTO GEAR WITHOUT LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND ACTS LIKE TRANSMISSION WON'T ENGAGE TO DRIVE

If it is an automatic transmission, first check the fluid level. If it is low, fill it up and try it again. If the level is fine, then there is a bigger issue and you should seek a professional's help.

Hello, I was just changing gears and the clutch was still working but the gears stopped engaging. Any ideas what could be wrong?

There are three parts to a standard shift transmission's clutch assembly. Clutch disk, Pressure plate, and release bearing. If any of these fail there is a loud noise. Since you haven't heard anything disturbing, I think these parts are OK. If everything was running fine until the moment the gears stopped engaging the problem may lie in the transmission itself. If I understand correctly the gears are grinding instead of going into the next gear. Have the transmission checked out to see if it is low on oil or damaged. A mechanic will drain the oil and check for pieces of metal.

Backing up very loud grinding like bearings

I would investigate the transfer case. By your description here it sounds as if the gears inside are worn and the drive chain inside is rubbing, causing the loud noise you hear.

Got on E-Bay a cheap 1987 Honda Civic CRX w/5speed Manual Transmission....Car runs great except when you drive down the road no matter what gear you are in a loud grinding noise comes from what I have been...

Have you checked the wheel bearings for play or roughness? If they're OK i'd suggest gearbox differential bearings. If they're that bad you'll find metal filings or swarf in the gearbox oil. Most *** cars have a magnetic oil drain plug.
