Engine noise and fails to start

Flushed radiator and changed thermostat after a small over heating issue. While driving engine started knocking and lost power and shut down. Was able to restart to get to a safe spot, but now won't start and makes a loud knocking sound. Not sure what the issue is. What are the possible issues?

Did you check oil dip stick. is the oil clean or is it milky? how is the coolant? any foamy looks to it? how many miles on this engine? could have jumped a tooth on the timing belt and caused over heating and that will lead to knocking. may have jumped again after last start and that could be why no start now. is this an interferance engine meaning if the belt goes does the valve train come in contact with the pistons. that could be the loud knocking which will bend velves and maybe break a piston. Sorry this is not good news. please reply and good luck

This sounds like a issue with the Pistons, Rods, Valves, that have broken off and now are banging around everytime the motor rotates

Check your oil. If it is frothy or gray then you have water in it and that means you have a blown head gasket. If there is oil in the radiator then the same holds true.

The nocking could be from a failed oil pump as well. If the oil pump fails then the car will not start. You have to remove the oil pan to replace the pump.

Over heating


Was the thermostat placed in the thermostat housing correctly? The spring end goes inside the housing toward the engine. Has the cooling system ever been back flushed? Take a flashlight and look inside the radiator (make sure radiator/engine is cold!) you may need to remove a little of the coolant, and look to see if the fins appear to be full of a white deposit. Possibility the radiator may be clogged .

Trying to burp cooling system, but when car heats up the coolant shoots out of the radiator like a fountain.. Thermostat is removed, still heats up


You are correct in your suspicions.
The thermostat blocks flow thru the radiator to help the engine warm up. The coolant still flows thru the block with the thermostat closed. If you remove the thermostat the cooling system should flow thru the radiator and stay below 160 degrees if the air temp is below 90.
If the thermostat is out and the engine is getting hot at idle speed, either the water pump has failed, or there is another blockage in the engine block.

Heater doesn't get hot on 96 chevy truck. Blows good, just cold. Replaced thermostat, flushed radiator. Any ideas?


Air Temperature Control Blend Door Failure No Heat or no AC (dependes on where door sticks)

In all modern cars there is a tiny DC electric motor driven gear drive that moves a plastic door that blends heated and cooled air from the AC and the heater core, this is called (interestedly enough) the air temperature control blend door actuator. The motor that moves this door fails because the door starts sticking from warping, most common complaint is no heat but it can be no AC as well. To replace these parts (blend door and blend door actuator) you must remove the entire dash from the car. Always have this problem confirmed by a dealer or qualified repair shop as it is a very expensive repair.

Other causes of no heat in the cabin are engine thermostats that are stuck open (engine runs cold) or air bubbles in the cooling system.

Luke warm heat in a 2002 expediton


Start with Flushing out your cooling system. Flush it out with Preston Radiator flush, you have your preference of ether the super flush which takes 3-6 hours or the 10 min flush which is good if you don't have the time to flush out your cooling system.

After you have flushed out your cooling system, replace your thermostat and you should be good for another cold winter driving. What happens is that after a few years of the coolant not being serviced, the coolant crystallizes and clogs up the heater core and radiator causing poor circulation. Poor circulation will cause poor heat and or overheating issues to the engine.

Before you go through all that inspect to make sure you have the right amount of coolant in your cooling system.

You need to make sure there is no air trapped in the system. I assume you flushed the radiator when you changed the thermostat. I also assume you installed fresh coolant mixed 50/50 antifreeze and distilled water. I also assume you installed the thermostat correctly with the spring facing the engine. Look on the upper part of the cooling system and the engine for bleeder valves (If Equipped). Now remove the radiator cap from a cold engine and make sure the radiator is totally full. Set the heater temperature control to HOT. Start the engine and look for escaping air bubbles from the radiator. Keep the coolant level full at all times. It will take awhile for the thermostat to fully open so be patient. Once you see no more escaping air bubbles install the cap. Wait about 2 minutes with the engine running and use the bleeder valves to remove any more trapped air from the system. Post back if this did not help.

Car is overheating, thermostat was changed and the radiator was flushed, car does not overheat while idoling, but when you start driving it overheats


It sounds like water pump may be your problem. It circulates a 50/50 mixture of glycol (or some form of) and water through the engine block and cylinder head and back through the radiator. In the radiator the mixture is cooled when air passes over the fins of the radiator. This is accomplished by driving or a mechanical/electrical fan when stationary. The water pump also circulates the mixture through the heater core giving the car heat. If the water pump is not circulating the water back to the radiator to cool, it will overheat. More heat is caused by the engine when driving (much less heat when idling), hence the overheating while driving.

OVERHEATING


This could be a multitude of things:

Stuck closed thermostat.

Cooling fan not coming on.

Clogged radiator.

Low on coolant.

Water pump failing/leaking.

Head gasket blown, leaking exhaust into antifreeze.

Clogged catalytic converter.

Thermostat: If the Van heats up, then feel the upper radiator hose. If it's cold, then your thermostat is closed. Replace thermostat.

Coolant: If low, simply fill with distilled water and coolant. Low levels will let engine over heat.

Radiator: If there are cold-to-the-touch spots on the radiator after it should be warmed up, then a clogged is probably occuring. Have radiator flushed.

Head Gasket: If you smell exhaust fumes in your coolant reservois tank, then you got a blown head gasket.

Cat Converter: Only can be tested if off the car. Or you could try a non-contact thermometer. These are also good to testing cold spot on radiator or if thermostats are open.

Cooling fan: If mechanical it'll be spinning. If electrical, it should come on automatically with the A/C, or when it gets hot.

Water pump: Will be leaking from the front if it needs replaced. On a van, it's a tough job.

Weird humming noise & over heating while sitting in traffic


The humming is the noise the coolant makes when the car overheats and forces open the relief valve in the radiator cap and flows through the small hose to the recovery bottle., it you had all this work this done only 2 things can cause the issue, one is a problem with the cooling fan, the other is a blown head gasket, which I suspect is the problem, before you flushed the system was the coolant rusted?
