Yes this is and interference engine and will be damaged if you were driving when the belt broke more than likely.

Yes it can be fixed. The cost is going to be the problem. THe cylinder head will have to removed and valves replaced. There also may be some damage to the pistons.

Is this an interferance engine? that means that when the belt brakes the pistons and the valves will make contact and damage will be done. check with a dealer parts department they may tell you. Not all engines are. if so you will have bent valves and possible damage to the valve seats and maybe even a broken piston. follow up after you get some info and would like to help. good luck

This is an interference engine on the 2001 Kia Rio with the 1.5L (1493 cc) In-Line 4-Cylinder.
With regrets...the Valves are bent.

Kia is currently having a huge sale. I say that sincerely, in that the repairs on a 2001 model may be better suited towards the purchase of a new vehicle. I understand though if that is not in your budget.

You are looking at a minimum of Valve Replacement.

I would strongly recommend (based upon experience) you replace the heads. IF you do decide that, Rebuilt Heads are available, are reliable and a lot cheaper versus buying brand new heads.

When the heads are removed a determination can be made regarding the pistons and cylinders. If the pistons and cylinders are damaged: I recommend a compete engine replacement. Again most Rebuilt engines are cheaper and very reliable when purchased from a reliable vendor.

Sorry you are having to deal with this, I know all too well the stress...

Clarification: I refer to "Heads" in my comment. Your vehicle only has one Head. I was using it in a general term and do not want to confuse you.

Just checking in to find out how things are going.

Did you decide to just repair the vehicle?

Let me know if there is anything I can help you or your husband with regarding the vehicle. You can contact me on this original Post in the Comments Section.

I was driving my 1991 honda accord an timing belt broke iam woorried that it might have damaged engine what should i look for i was going to replace belt an try to get back running any advice thanks

Honda engines are what they call interference engines. This means when a timing belt breaks, the pistons hit the valves and bend them. You will need to remove the cylinder head and get the bent valves replaced if you want it to run correctly. Impossible to know how many valves are bent, depends on how fast the engine was turning when the belt broke.

My timing belt broke while i was driving what damage am i looking at

Ouch, I suspect this is going to be expensive. Most times if a belt breaks while driving, valves get bent or broken also. Usually head has to be reworked or replaced. Bring your wallet/ (sorry)

The timing belt in my 2001 pt cruiser is broken. Did this cause any damage to the engine? or do we just need to replace the timing belt

Its got damage, bent valves. replace every thing on timing belt, tensioner, pulleys, water pump. The head needs to go to a machine shop and bent valves replaced.

Replaced timing belt, but van will not start?

It is possible that this is a zero clearence engine. Meaning that the valves can hit the pistons if the cam timing is off or the timing belt breaks. I would strongly suspect that you have bent valves. This can easily be diagnosed with a compression test. If valves are bent the repair will require at least a rebuilt cylinder head and gaskets. It is also possible that there could be piston damage as well. The reason it is not starting is it has no compression due to bent valves.

Just broke timing belt on my 300zx,does thi

Yes your engine is a interference engine,
which mean valve to piston hit.

But replace the timing belt.
Possible you didn't bent a valve.
Depend on the condition when the T/B broke,

Let me know.....

Timing Belt broke while driving my 96 Toyota Rav4, 2 wheel drive. Mechanic said that Rav has a zero tolerance engine and engine will need to be replaced. The timing belt has 55,000 miles on it and we were...

Zero tolerance means the valves may have hit the piston when the timing belt broke. I would suggest doing a cylinder leakage test to see if the valves are bent or not. If the valves are not bent then you can replace the belt and everything will be ok. If there are bent valves then the cylinder heads will need to be removed and repaired.

2000 nubira timeing belt broke

yes it is possible for the valves to get bent depending on how long it was ran after the belt broke

the timing belt should be changed every 60,000 miles.
your engine is an interference engine, which means if the timing belt breaks or skips, the valves will hit the pistons.
if your belt broke you will have bent valves. so the heads will need to come off and bent valves replaced.
