Over drive is always constantly on unless you are towing excess weight. The overdrive will shift into that gear usually at 39 to 41 MPH which saves you fuel

For a Ford 2006 expedition Xlt do I drive with overdrive on or off. I'm not pulling anything and this is my first t suv

Your owners manual should explain how overdrive works.
Under normal conditions, you drive in overdrive all the time. The transmission computer decides if overdrive is necessary or not.
The only time you drive with overdrive off is when you are descending a steep hill or pulling a load.

When to and not to use my overdrive

Use your overdrive when driving at highway speeds on long stretches of road. Disable your overdrive (turn it off) when driving in the mountains and when towing something. When driving in traffic, use your own discretion as to whether or not to use overdrive, based on the amount of start & stop driving you are doing, and if you are attaining speeds high enough for overdrive to engage (above 40 m.p.h., generally).

Wont shift into drive

The "Drive" you speak of is Overdrive.Youve lost connection to it.Possibly the brake pedal switch under dash has burned out and not putting power to the trans for overdrive. When you touch the brake pedal, overdrive goes off. When released, overdrive can come back on when at spped to do so.This switch could possibly just have come unplugged also.Check this first and plug it back in and drive it.

What is the "overdrive" for?

overdrive is just what it sounds like-the transmission turns slower than the engine, allowing more speed with less fuel. It is only applicable in higher speed, low load situations like open road driving, but most modern cars with overdrive will allow engagement at speeds as low as 35 MPH to save fuel. To a point, overdrive is effective for some city driving, but if you constantly do stop and go driving, in city enviornments at speeds under 40, it is best for the engine (and performance) to 'lock out' overdrive.

1996 explorer what gear do u drive in and?do u supposed 2 cut the overdrive off when?just regularly driving

OVERDRIVE is fine in most driving. if you tow a trailler or pulling long hills take out of overdrive. otherwise the vehicle will handle when to shift.

There are two D on my cars gear list i dont know which one is overdrive & what is the difference between drive & overdrive.the car is 2004 mercury sble

The D nearest to N is the overdrive. In every day driving just leave it in overdrive. When climbing or decending steep hills you can downshift into Drive, this will prevent the transmission from constantly shifting between gears.

1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse transmission slips in overdrive

well the low cost way to go first would be to try and change the trans fluids. If the problems still remains the it may be an internal problem
