Yes, upper plenum removal is required to access the spark plugs. It is really quite simple.

Here is a visual tutorial of how to do the job yourself (if so inclined).

Best regards.

Yes the upper plenum(or intake) must be removed to install new spark plugs and wires. Labor time is about 1.5 hours. So figure about $150 labor if they charge 100 per book hour.

Is it necessary to remove the manifold to replace plugs on my 1998 Grand Marquis ?

no you do not. unplug the plug wire and remove the plug as you would on any other engine. sometimes you may have to move some things out of the way to gain access but you don`t have to remove the intake to change plugs.

what kind of spark plugs did you put in it? NGK's not the cheap ones;check the plug ports for oil if oil is present, put new seals in them.try these and it should fix the problem.

The EGR valve is under the throttle body. You could take the vacuum line off the valve and plug it just to leave the EGR valve closed. Then drive to see if you still have the problem. I don't remember where the purge valve is, but it is usually in the engine compartment at the other end of a hose that connects to the intake manifold. The other hose goes to the vapor canister. You can pull the purge line off the manifold and plug both to keep the purge vapors out. If you spot any bad hoses in the process of doing all these things, that may well be your problem.

I was told that in order to change the spark plugs on my Nissan Maxima, the shop would have to remove the intake manifold to an extra cost of 200.00. Is it necessary to remove the intake manifold to change...

This is possibly true, especially if you have a 6 cylinder. They don't actually remove the whole intake from the motor, there is a section of the intake system that can be removed fairly easily and then the plugs can be accessed. Unfortunately, this design was more to push the price of a tune up higher than a needed design change, at least in my opinion. Since you have to remove that part most people are more inclined to take a vehicle to the dealer to replace spark plugs instead of doing it themselves and as you know, the dealership prices are higher than anywhere else and the mechanics have the same qualifications other mechanics have.Typically no seals need to be replaced when this is done but it does take more time and that is where the dealership makes it's money.

Tune up on cown and country (chrysler)

I just changed the rear spark plugs on my 1997 Chrysler Town & Country this weekend. It took me about 7 hours to do everything. When you replace the rear spark plugs, its a good item to replace everything i have listed below. Listed below are the items i changed while i was in there:

Valve Cover Gaskets
All 6 sparks (the rear are the hardest) I used the Bosch Plat. +4
Intake manifold gasket (only cost $3-4)
Throttle body gasket.
Air filter
Spark Plug Wires

I also bought some throttle body cleaner and sprayed the throttle body to clean it out. When the throttle body is dirty your van can stall.
I took pictures of everything i took apart, which i can email you to help you out.

Thank You,
Nip
