I would like to know what type of power steering fluid i need

I would like to know what type of power steering fluid to use in my 92 nissan pickup, i know the truck actually only has power assist for the steering and the lines also feed a pulley on the belt assembley and the cap for the resevoir doesnt say what kind of fluid to use. I've been told dot 3 brake fluid should suffice but i wanted to check first before i did that.

Brake fluid is used in brake and clutch master cylinders only...If used anywhere else it can damage the seals in your system. Use fluid designated as power steering fluid only. In pre- 1980 vehicles trans oil could be substituted but the friction modifiers in trans oil are not compatible with steering systems.
Your power steering system should not use any fluid. If you need to add, then there is a leak that needs to be found. Repeated low levels will cause early pump failure that can also damage the steering rack by contaminating it with fine metal. If the leak is minor, use something like lucas sealer...it usually works well and will not damage parts. It will not work on line leaks though.

I have a 1989 Nissan Bluebird SSS SR18 (Di) model KEU12NA1 Type E-EU12. I recently topped up the reservoir with an over the counter steering fluid which is transparent in color and not eh same color as...

all power steering fluid is the same actually us can use transmission fluid if u want
now being as you had to add fluid i would assume u have a leak some where in the system
you may be low on fluid also there probably air in system (when u have a leak it also allows air into system especially when you run low on fluid)
also if anyone ever put stop leak in system stop leak is a lot thicker oil and will take longer to heat up and thin out in cold weather to allow easy turning
first check for leaks repair if needed
if no leaks are found drain system add fresh power steering fluid
if that doesn't fix problem you have a bad power steering pump replace pump

My Nissan Maxima '92 leaks power steering fluid. I had someone look at it but they couldn't find the leak. I just put in new fluid every few weeks and it works fine but if there is an easy fix I would like...

if there is a leaking seal in the power steering rack and pinion or in the hydraulic pump, a power steering stop leak may swell the seal enough to stop the leak. if there is still a leak, it is likely a damaged / corroded line or fluid cooler. next time you need to top up your fluid, i recommend Lucas brand power steering stop leak / treatment. after a couple top ups it will stop the leak it if is a rubber seal problem. good luck!

Some Asian cars and trucks hve the pump sitting low on the engine and might be hard to see. The resovoir tank should be visible on the engine or fender and the fluid is caried to the pump via rubber hoses.
