SOURCE: My 2000 Jaguar s type

It means that a fault has been detected and stored by the engine management system. The fault most likely a component within the engine electrical system e.g a camshaft sensor, crank sensor, O2 sensor etc.

The only way to narrow the fault down is to have the engine management fault memory read with a scanning tool, which any decent garage will have. The emissions test result could be a secondary problem as a result of the fault causing the warning light to come on, or there could be an air leak in the intake system or a leak in the exhaust system. From here you need to have the fault memory read and go from there.

If you do not want to go to the dealer you can try stopping by your local parts store, Pepboys or Autozone as they will usually scan for these codes at no charge. Their generic scan tool will be limited in its capabilities but all we need is the code number which is a P then four digits. Once you have the code numbers let me know what they are so I can assist you with the diagnosis and repair. Try this before to make some Throttle Body cleaning job.

Hope helps.

2001 Jaguar fault code P1589 Throtle Body angel. Is there a way I can fix without a costley visit to the JAG shop

the throttle body angle is the throttle butterfly opening angle, the signal is sent to the ecm from a potentiometer on the throttle body and is compared to the throttle pedal sensor if both signals are not in unison then you get that fault code you dont say what model you have! if its got a cable operated throttle pedal the pedal sensor is also on the throttle body. so you should clean the butterfly and housing using a solvent and check the wiring and connectors but at that year 99 to 2001 they had problems with throttle bodies lots had to be replaced. so recon throttle body may be best option

What does Failsafe Engine Mode mean? my manual was stolen

Hello! Fail safe mode is when the vehicle's computer detects a serious problem an allows you to "limp" off the road or highway safely.

Fail safe mode on a Jaguar is mainly caused by a dirty and gummed up throttle body. The throttle body on your auto has a protective coating, so you can not use just any cleaner. It requires a throttle body cleaner that states "safe to use with a protective coating". The butterfly valve in the throttle body will actually "stick out". This causes fail safe mode to kick in reducing the amount of power your engine can produce.

Also check the plugs on your ECM (computer) and make sure they are all seated properly.

Where is throttle body

Follow your air intake hose to where it's attached to engine, that's your throttle body.

My 2000 Jag S type also keeps saying failsafe mode?

fail safe mode is something the vehicle computor will go into when there is a problem with the vehicle it allows u to get off the highway or road safely you need to take vehicle to repair shop or your dealer which ever u prefer Failsafe engine mode on a 2000 jaguar s type is caused by a stopped up throttle body. Jaguar says not to clean the throttle body since it has a protective coating to help keep deposits from accumulating. You can clean the throttle body as long as you use ONLY throttle body cleaner that states it is safe to use with a protective coating. The butterfly valve in the throttle body will actually stick not allowing air to flow into the manifold causing failsafe engine mode to kick in reducing the amount of power your engine will produce. To solve the issue just clean out your throttle body, it will cost you around $5 dollars and take 1 hour of your time.

Where is the mass air flow sensor located on a jaguar x-type

hi from the uk the location of mass air flow sensor on x type jag is as follows==it is on the r/h/side of the air filter cover with jaguar embossed on top? this sensor is just prior to the intake hose that connects to the motorised throttle body from filter connections underneath it to unplug and meter is held by two screws ?if memory serves ? may i suggest you remove the large hose and use a little wd40 or similar to clean /lubricate the throttle butterfly in throttle body throat at this point so as to prevent future sticking upsetting of idling ? hope this helps ?
