1999 chevy express van brake lights inop when headlights are on, I removed the bulb from the lens and when the brakes are pressed down one filament will operate. when the headlights are turned on the same filament comes on and when the brakes are depressed the same filament goes out instead of the other filament lighting up ? I've swapped bulbs to directional plug and both bulbs act the same in the brake socket.

Yep seen this many times. Basicly the sockets are no good anymore. The tail lights are on a sub harness, so you can just unplug and replace the taillight harnesses. Very common on those vans. The harnesses are available everywhere

is it just the brake lights or the tail lights when the headlights are on? the tail lights may have a double filament bulb one lights up when brake is applied and the other filament is for just tail lihts so check the bulbs carefully and if you see one filament is broken replace the bulb. also make sure the socket where the bulb seats is not corroded or dirty

1999 vw passat . brake lights stay on when headlights are on

Check to make sure that the correct bulb is installed. Usually, the brake light bulbs have two filaments inside the bulb, one for when driving at night for visual and the other turns on as soon as you hit the brakes. Now, if they are correct, then you may have a faulty brake switch.

It may sound silly, but check your brake light bulbs to see if they have been installed incorrectly. Brake light bulbs have two filaments, one for tail light, and a brighter one for brake lights. On some cars if the bulb is installed wrong, the brighter filament will stay on for tail lights. The only other thing I can think of is the wrong bulbs have been installed.

The printed circuit board that the bulbs push into needs replacement. Any autoparts store will have it. It just screws into tailight assembly & attaches to wiring harness.

Make sure that it has the proper bulb and that it is in correctly. If it's in wrong, or the socket is bad. Both filaments could be lighting. Think of it as looking at someone driving in front of you with their lights on. When they apply the brakes, both filaments light causing the light to brighten. That is likely the cause for your signal being too bright.

There is a possibility that if the wires are damaged in any way they could be cross contaminating each other creating a short. One wire powering both filaments.

Check that the bulb is inserted correctly. If you feel that it is. Check the socket with a test light.

First with the lights off.

Second with the headlights on (parking lights) there should only be power to one side of the socket. If there's power to more than one, trace and check the wires.

Third with the brake lights on (have someone press the pedal, or set something on it). Two points in the socket should have power.

Get back to me with a kind word if all works out well and I've helped.

My brakes lights stay on when my headlights are on, but the brake lights work fine when my headlights are off. Do you know what may be the problem?

This problem likely is the filaments touching in one of the dual filament bulbs used for the brake lights. Another sign of this would be the dash illumination lights coming on when the headlights are off and the brake pedal is pressed. The solution is to replace the defective bulb.

Brake light work fine as longs as the head lights are off. Once you turn on the head lights the brakes with the exception of the center light on top.

Check the bulb sockets, it is common on these vans that water gets into the bulb sockets and shorts out the socket. You may need to replace the sockets to get them to work again. Also check the bulbs as these are dual filament bulbs, when your lights are off and you step on the brake it lights the parking lamp filament. However as the lights are on the brake lights may seem to not work as the parking lamps are already on.
