Question about 1985 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer

1 Answer

1985 Chevy Blazer 4x4 2.8L V6 - engine wont start. However, when I dumped a small amount of fuel in carb - it started briefly. Is this a fuel pump issue - if so where is it located? Or can it be something else in fuel system? Should I see a small stream of fuel inside carb when I engage linkage?

You should see gas squirt in the carb with the movement of the linkage....if not, bad fuel pump.

2.8L Engine The fuel pump is located on the front left side of the engine.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the fuel hoses from the pump. If necessary, tag the lines to assure proper installation.
  3. Remove the fuel pump-to-engine bolts and remove the fuel pump from the engine, then remove and discard the old gasket.
To install:
Before installing the fuel pump, it may be helpful to rotate the crankshaft so that the cam lobe is on the down stroke.
  1. Use a new gasket and RTV sealant, then install the pump to the engine.
  2. Tighten the fuel pump-to-engine bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  3. Connect the fuel hoses to the pump, as noted during removal.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine and check for proper pump operation.

I have a 1984 S-10 Blazer since it was new
almost 29 years ago

Explain how a new fuel pump doesn't work

I only had that once on my 1965 corvette
A new pump had been assembled with the
diaphragm outside on a couple holes,a quick fix

You must have fuel to the carb & thus you need
to take the carb apart & work on that

So far I found that NAPA is the only source for
a carb kit

Blazer wont start

You are getting good spark to the plugs? Have to assume you retimed it after you changed the rotor and cap. Wires are good?

Could be the ignition module, but they usually are either good or bad and not itermittent(sp)...

If it trying but just not 'catching'.. seems like a timing issue, or possibly the coil (although coils tend to be good or bad as well)

Won't start

Check for fuel pressure at carb by placing a pressure gauge between the carb and fuel line . Check fuel delivery by putting a long hose connected to fuel line at carb and cranking. If you have pressure below 4lbs or if you get poor delivery cranking (with hose in a can or jar to measure amount) than you have either a bad pump or filter. If engine starts when you pour a small amount of fuel into it, and delivery and pressure was good, then there is a carb problem. When working on older vehicles, always make sure that fuel line from tank is not rusted and leaking.

After you dump the fuel in the throttle body it will continue to run on its own or die as soon as it burns up all the fuel you dump in? Do you have access to (Noid lights)? Are both plugs attached to the distributor?
