Question about 1985 Oldsmobile 98

1 Answer

Serpentine belt is riding on edge of 1989 Olds Delta 88 3.8L water pump pully. I think water pump may be shot. How do I replace it?

The 1989 Olds 3.8L is a transverse mounted engine--the fan is not in line with the water pump. I ended up having to remove the plastic radiator overflow reservoir (which slides up off the second plastic reservoir for the windshield washer fluid). With that out of the way, I could get to the eight mounting bolts. Incidentally, I had to give the water pump a couple sharp raps with a hammer to break the old gasket sealer which had essentially glued the pump to the block.

You will need to take the raidator out then take the fan off then remove all bolts to the pump then pull out reverse order to put new one on

COULD BE A BAD BEARING IN THE IDLER PULLY OR THE TENSIONER ON THE TIMING BELT OR THE SERPENTINE BELT. IF ITS A SQUEEL IT MAY BE SOME COOLANT GOT ON THE SERPENTINE BELT. TRY TO WASH THE BELT WITH WATER AND LET DRY COMPLETELY. IF NOISE REMAINS RETURN TO THE SHOP THAT DID THE WORK.

Alternator belt is squaking

Buy a belt lubricant spray. OR change belt if old and worn.cracked, or showing signs of aging.

OR bearings in the alternator are shot.

If it is a serpentine belt (uni-belt), could be bearings in the water pump or power steering pump.

Belt inst

For the 3.0L Vulcan, you have a tensioner that is located just below the power steering pully. Use a 15mm wrench or the 15mm shallow well socket that comes in a Serpentine Belt tool to push the tensioner toward the rear of the engine compartment. Take the old belt off and route the new belt. The belt begins at the crankshaft pully, goes under and around the a/c compressor, up around the power steering pump, around (with the flat edge) the idler pully, around the alternator, the flat edge then sits against the tensioner and back around to the water pump pully. You should have a belt routing diagram on the underside of the hood just above the serpentine pully assembly.

How do you replace a crankshaft sensor for a 1997 olds Delta 88?

There are two crankshaft sensors located at the edge of the harmonic balancer. That's the large wheel coming out of the engine, passenger side, the wheel that powers the serpentine belt. One sensor is the crankshaft position sensor and the other is... I forget... crankshaft angle sensor or something. I replaced both on my car. I don't know wich one is your problem. When you buy a sensor, get the one with the mounting bracket already attached. They had problems with the sensor getting damaged from being adjusted wrong. Having the bracket already attached gives you the right adjustment.

Remove the serpentine belt. (It has a tensioner wheel. When that is moved, the belt becomes loose and can be removed.) With an 18 mm wrench, turn the crankshaft until one of the openings in the metal fin is at the sensor, giving a space where the sensor can be removed. One sensor is reachable from the top, but it is real hard to see. The other is reachable from underneath. My guess is, the lower one is you problem only because my lower one failed twice and the upper one only once. Your son has to crawl underneath, unhook the wire from the sensor, and unbolt the sensor mounting bracket. Put the new one in. Keep your fingers crossed.
