Question about 2003 Nissan Altima

My shop says I need to flush the transmission on my 2003 Altima. Is this wise for a car with 130,000 miles? They say there are metal shavings in the fluid.

At 130,000 its due now, small metallic shavings are not a bad sign, better do it

When I bought my 98 gmc Sonoma they told me there was a transmission flush it had metal shaving in it

It is possible that the metal shavings are from a part that is failing before ,during and after the flush. Something like a failing torque converter will do this, or failing bearings in the box. A pressure test of the transmission may pinpoint the problem.

I have a 2002 Odyssey that has had transmissions problems. My research led me to flush the transmission fluid by changing it 3 times in row with just a few miles in between. (each change only releases 3.5 qts. and the transmission holds 8). This way you get 90% of the old "worn" fluid out and replace it with new fluid. Use genuine Honda ATF. The problem is that Honda fluid has special friction modifiers in it that eventually lose their effectiveness.

For a good take on this go to the Lube Guard website and read about friction modifiers. You can boost the friction modifiers in your current fluid with a Lube Guard product (or others) but remember that your current fluid may have been overheated and may also have contaminates from clutch discs that are wearing down.

The ATF is easy to drain, not so easy to refill. The drain plug has a large magnet on it to catch metal particles and shavings. This is a good indicator of the amount of damage that has been done. When you remove it, take a picture of it so you can show it to a transmission shop if you ever need work to be done at a later date. The refill plug on the top of the transmission may have been modified with a factory replacement part (part of a recall) that takes fluid from a splice in the transmission cooler line to a fill plug with a nozzle in it. The modified fill plug squirts some cooled fluid onto the second gear. So the new fill plug has a fluid line going into it. It can still be removed easy enough but you will need a long narrow funnel to pour new fluid in.

2003 Nissan Altima 2.5 S maintenance manual says 60 k miles or 48 months to flush the coolant and replace it. 105 k miles or 84 months replace the timing belt.

What could cause metal shavings in oilpan 2003 altima 2.5?

metal on metal contact is causing peices of your rings or cycinders to be scraped away. these pieces circulate and because they are heavier than oil they sink to the oil pan as shavings

Well no metal shavings should be in the filter if there is there is,something is not right internally in your transmission.When there is larger metal shavings in your tranny filter your tranny is probabley gonna have to be rebuilt or replaced.You can try changing the fluid and filter and see if that helps but nore than likely you will need to change out tranny with a new or rebuilt one.

Even when warmed up and driving my 2003 Nissan Altima changes gears pretty hard.

You need a transmission flush through the radiator and transmission
a new tranny filter and clean the pan.If this still happens then your transmition is slipping gears because of shaved gears this is noticable
when there is lots of metal particles or chunks.If this occours than i suggest a rebuild or used transmition.

You are going to need a transmission shop. Mazdas do not always throw codes. You have an early OBD transmission, which do not send out many codes.

Sometimes it wont kick in 2nd gear.(20 mph)

it maybe a pluged tranny line did you get it flushed?? a little metal shavings might have made there way up there and caused a block so get that checked

I have the same vehicle. Is this your first Transmission oil change? If it is don't worry about the shavings. Its break in stuff that should have been flushed out at 30k,60k and 90k. But who's counting lol. If flushed regularily them what he is saying is somewhat true. Its gears that are wearing not bearings. A rebuilt tranny goes any where from 1,900 to 2,700.
The 4cylinder camry does a hell of a lot better all around than the six cylinder.

first check transfluid for level,color,smell&metal shavings if its dark in color and smells burnt. look to change the trans. or if metal shavings also look to change trans if color is clear red flush trans then pull trans pan change filter refill with now toyota type trans fluid.
