When drving in reverse (backing out of a driveway/parking), I depress the brake pedal and the brakes squeal for only a very short while. I repeated this again, slightly depressing the brake pedal, and the brakes squeal. It's not very loud nor does it continue while continuing to depress the pedal.

Testimonial: "Thanks. This sounds very reasonable. I just bought the car from a private owner and the brakes are not OEM."

My brakes squeal only in reverse with the brake lightly applied to roll back slow.

Brakes can be strange sometimes. There may be a "Hard Spot" on the brake shoe/pad or even on the drum/rotor. You may need to have the drum/rotor turned. Sometimes they can sand or rough up the shoe/rotor to resolve the issue. Make sure the wear sensors are not damaged or alignment.

I changed all 4 brakes on my dodge stratus and since there has been a loud squealing noise when I brake. I dont hear it when im in reverse. Its very loud when turning and braking

Most new cars come with ceramic disc brake pads to reduce noise. Aftermarket brake pads, depending upon materials in them, can be prone to squealing. Some pads come with adhesive shims that are designed to absorb vibration and reduce or stop squeal. There is also a compound you can but to put on the back of the pads to do the same thing when you install. Sometimes the noise will go away once the pads have had a chance to settle in .Some are just ornery and won't shut up.

Rear brakes squeal when car is braking in reverse

I believe you have drum brakes on the back. Not sure. If so, it probably is the automatic adjuster is frozen. This comes into play when you go backwards and apply the brakes. It is used so that the emergency brake is in proper alignment, that is, it only takes a few clicks before the emergency brakes start being applied. If there were no adjuster, as the brakes go old, you would lose the emergency brakes entirely.

I had the rotors and brakes replaced on Feb. 2012. My brakes are now squealing.

Wow,your vehicle should have no brake noise regardlous of age,I have a 85 Nissan 720 truck,no brake noise. If they did the brake work, take it back again and if they don't fix it right,no noise and good brakes, let them know that you will go visit the BBB,You are required to take your vehicle back three times and if still not right,The BBB.will investigate.

Squealing Tires?

Is it a tire squeal or brake squeal? If it is brake squeal put high temp synthetic brake lube grease behind the brake pads to reduce/remove the brake squeal. This allows the pads to sit on a bed of grease and will not vibrate at the frequency which produces the squeal.

It only has 30,000 miles on it and the rear brakes squeal when applied when first driven cold. Does not do it after it has been driven and warmed up.

brakes typically only last about mas 30k miles. might be the brake lining warning shims letting you know its low or that plus glazed rotors/ drums needing to be replaced and or cut.

When gear is put in reverse it makes a squeeling sound but just in that gear.

Check the brake pads, see if the pads are worn down to the "squealers"; these are metal tabs 9on the pads) that indicate that the brake pads are worn to the replacement thickness.
They commonly squeal only in reverse.
