YOU HAVE TO RETIME BY REMOVE AIR CLEANER.REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER.AND TIMING BELT COVER.TURN THE ENGINE TO TDC OF THE NUMBER 1 CYLINDER HEAD.YOU NEED TO INSERT A SETTING BAR INTO THE SLOT ON THE REAR OF THE CAMSHAFT.VW TOOL 2065A OR EQUIVALENT TO HOLD CAMSHAFT IN PLACE.WHEN YOU RETIME THE INJECTION PUMP YOU HAVE A PIN ALIGNMENT SLOT ON THE SPROCKET HUB IT SHOULD BE AT 12 OCLOCK POSITION.YOU HAVE TO INSERT LOCK PIN TO HOLD SPROCKET IN PLACE.WHEN YOU INSTALL THE TIMING BELT.YOU HAVE TO PRIME THE INJECTION PUMP.BY HOOKING A HAND HELD VACUUM PUMP TO THE RETURN LINE FITTING AND DRAW FUEL INTO THE INJECTION PUMP TO KEEP FROM DAMAGING PUMP IF PUMP IS DRY.THIS WILL GET VAN GOING BUT THE DEALERSHIP STILL HAS TO RETIME TO INJECTION PUMP USING A SCANNER.IF VAN DONT CRANK BROKEN BELT COULD HAVE DAMAGED THE VALVES AND PISTON.

Hi,

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
New users get to try the service completely Free afterwhich it costs $6 per call and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Goodluck!

SOURCE: Retiming of vw transporter diesel pump

This requires the use of a special VW tool called "the indicator tool". Visit this site to buy it:

http://www.partsplaceinc.com/catalog/vw-specialty-tools-diesel-tdi-timingtools55.shtml

You will also need to buy a repair manual for your car so you can get the appropriate timing setting for the pump. I recommend the Bently manual:

http://www.bentleypublishers.com/vw/eurovan/1992-2003/VW-Eurovan-92-99-Factory-Repair-Manual.html

It's expensive but worth it. If you don't want to spend that much, you may find pump timing information in a Haynes or Chilton manual which can be purchased on Amazon or at your local Autozone.

Good luck.

incorrect ignition point for the injectors
diesels ignition point is around 22 degrees btdc for pumps or from the crank sensor if common rail ( information of year or pump or common rail not included )
if it is a pump with pipes to injectors , you have the timing incorrect

Fan belt snapped on my renault express diesel changed that but now it now it turns over but wont fire up

check the belt is on correctly if it is it will be tight and around all pulleys, make sure around fuel pump pulley. Also ask yourself why belt snapped in first place was it old/cracked and due to break or did a pulley sieze and cause belt to squeel and burn then snap.

Just a new belt--the valves on gas engines do not hit the piston like on diesel(this is because diesel has very high compression)
