Question about 1995 Nissan Maxima

5 Answers

I Need as much advice I can get. I need it fast. I have a 1995 nissan Maxima and I love it. It looks great and it has always run perfect. It has never stalled out,or not started never even ran rough. As a matter of fact its a bullet, It does have 200,000 miles and still it can go fast as hell. I Drove it to visit a friend, parked and shut it off. 30 mins later I go to leave and find that someone took a boxcutter (I think) and cut open the side walls of all 4 tires. It took about 10 days till I could get the money. So I had it taken by flatbed tow to a repair shop (6 blocks away). I had the tow truck follow me to the shop. They rolled it off, I handed the key to mechanic. All the lights and stuff lit up, It didnt even turn over (you know when starter dont even go) I was pretty sure that it needed a jump do to not being started for 10 days . Its same battery that I got it with. I walked to the office to give them phone number Ect. AND HERE IT COMES... 2 mins later the other comes inside saying YOUR TIMING CHAIN SNAPPED !! I go "what the do you mean come on" go out to my car I Hear the engine running (so I guess it wasnt a dead battery) But even I could hear it barely running ,sputtering ,chokeing ect. The guy tells me he can hear that it has no compression and probably has just 3 of the 6 left. He says it not worth putting a new engine in . He said "I could give a few dollars for it " PLEASE HELP ME !! I dont understand how a car with a chain. Could have it snap when It was perfect when I parked It turned it off and now somehow the next time when It at the shop my engine is blown. Thing is I am a woman I live alone have no family and I live on disability. It will take me at least 2 years to save up enough even for another 15 year old car. He wants me to call him today to let him know what I want to do. Is there maybe someway I can at least be sure that the chain did break while it was parked on flats for those ten days So my question is ANYONE HAVE ANY ADVICE. I loved that car and dont want to go a couple of years without one while I save up enough money. Thanks to everyony who at least read it. sorry it was so long Thanks Again R

To the Angel who got back so quick. I dont know what they do for a compression test. I can add that it was late at night when I got there with the tow truck that followed me there I was in the little office in the back of the shop the car was still outside on the street in front. I was in the office no more than 10 minutes when THE TOW TRUCK GUY came walking in from outside saying your timing chain is broken you got a broken timing chain. The man who I was giving my phone contact numbers to walked out right behind me I the other mechanic was in front of my car the hood was up and it was running. The one who Was in the office with said "Oh yeah I can hear it from here already. It sounds like it got only 3 cylinders left. Then I signed my towers service confirmation the first guy then while all of us were outside that it would cost over 2 thousand to fix it needs to be junked but Ill give you a "few Dollars for it" Hope that helped you get a better idea thanks R

If the timing chain snapped, the car would not start. No way, no how. How does he know there is only 3 cylinders working? Did he do a compression test? Do you know this guy? If not, don't trust him. Have your car towed home. If it's not worth it to fix, why does he want it?

Hello! I find it very difficult to believe that the timing chain "snapped"...First of all it would have taken the fellow several hours of removal to view the timing chain...Not to mention the fact that an engine will not run without it...Based upon what you are saying, the repair shop is not a place I would have my vehicle worked on...The mechanic may have misspoke so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt...However,"hearing" that compression is lost is not a valid test...

There are quite a few reasons why an engine would run rough...Lets keep it simple and troubleshoot the problem without spending much money...Car was running fine when you parked it...Tires were slashed...Any damage under the hood?

First, I would bring the Maxima home...Then purchase a new battery...You'll need some simple tools...A set of metric open end wrenches (10mm) for the battery terminals as an example...Also a multimeter...Home improvement stores sell them for $15-$20...

Send a comment and I'll talk you through a few simple tests...Guru.............Saailer

Wow!...sound very weird, for me i think that place is a bad place to go with your car...plus the guy told you he would give you few dollar for your car! this is to weird!...i think that guy might just unplog few spark plug wire to make you belive the engine is gone and if it's really the timing chain it might happend when they tow it the only thing i will say to you, take your car to another shop as fast as you can for a double check and tell him your storry and what i told you... good luck! please give me some news of that bad story....lipak!

Personally ,I'd get the car out of there, one way or another, and look for another mechanic. Almost sounds like tires were done, knowing you'd need a tow truck, etc, etc. Have you asked local police about the chance that maybe this has happened to others as well?

I have to get my 2 cents worth in on this one,. The guy is a scam artist. I want to know where he is so that when I get a hold of his throat, he will have to eat with a straw for the rest of his life! I hate people like that. It is very rare for a chain to break, if broken, it would have been slamming so hard it would be smashing the cam to pieces. It would bot run on 3 cylinders! I Need as much advice I can get. I need it fast. I - moz-screenshot-2.pngI would contact the police, take the scum to court, and have him shut down. If they won't do anything, plant some pot plants in his yard and then call the police. There is probably nothing wrong with your car, they pulled the plug wires off just like the other guy said. Get somebody else to find out what they did, then flatten the tires on the wrecker. Ooohhh that makes me mad. Let us know where this bum is.

My 1995 nissan Maxima Ge has a problem starting when it is hot and also cuts off after accelerated after a stop, any help would be greatly appreciated.

3 easy things to check, 1 check the distributor cap , look for any build up of carbon deposits 2. check the rotor,, normally you can lightly sand the front of it and clean it up 3. if you know how, spry some carb cleaner into the throttle body opening , you don't need much ,, move the flap open and clean that too,,

it could be a failing sensor, most common is the cam sensor, if its not reading sometimes it will give wrong signal, most come to do this when engine is hot.

if your chain becomes loose it will become very noisy and should be replaced since most nissans are interference engines which means lots of money for a new engine

1997 Maxima has had 4 alternators in 4 years!

Hey! I have a 97 Maxima SE and it runs great too! I have been through 4 alternators in 12 years....3 in the first 5 and finally one for the last 7. Make sure you have a new- Nissan part specific alternator. And, make sure your battery is not weak nor small for your car size. Hope this helps!

TRY cleaning your throttle plate. these get some carbon buildup and will restrict airflow at idle and can cause the computer to try and compensate for it

I've always had great luck ordering from Courtesy Nissan in Texas (www.courtesyparts.com) - they have parts for all Nissans and seemed to be staffed with enthusiasts. 9 years and counting and no screwups for me yet:)
