1993 SW2: Engine begins to overheat after driving or in stop...

Engine begins to overheat after driving or in stop-go traffic. I can cool the engine by turning on the ac. one line of thought was fuseelay problem with fan #1. Checked fuse and switched relay and the same problem occurs. It appears that there is only 1 fan on this vehicle. can the ac cool the vehicle without using the fan? Or is there some sort of temperature sensor that is not functioning? your help is appreciated.

How do I fix my engine that gradually overheats in traffic or in idle?

If it only overheats when stopped and stays cool or normal when driving that I would suspect that the radiator fan is not working. Check the obvious like fuses and relays. The relay can be swapped with another identical relay in the fuse block. If those check out than you will need some more advanced diagnostic equipment and info. If you up to the challenge I can provide you with some more in depth info to help you solve.

The radiator fan on my 2007 bmw 525i works fine while car is driving. Once i stop at a red light or in traffic the the fan stops working, ac blows hot air and mins later the car overheats. The car has a...

My guess is that your electric fan is NOT operating at all. Under normal conditions, just going down the highway, your cooling system will function just fine without a fan running. The air flow through the radiator is adequate to keep things cool. However, when you stop, you quickly get into an "overheat" situation. Actually, you should be able to hear your fan begin operating when your engine temperature starts climbing or your air conditioner requires the fan to do its thing. Note: If you've ever severely overheated your engine, your problems may be worse than just a fan not running, but you really do need to confirm whether your fan is operating correctly, or not. Another note: I had a vehicle with a tendency to overheat when stopped. It turned out to be a faulty (leaking) pressure cap on the cooling system.

Overheating in traffice

sounds like your cooling fan isn't working at high speed the air will cool the engine but when your at low speeds there isn't enough air to do so so i would check your cooling fan that is more than likely your problem hope this helps.

Engine fan not working

Could be low on coolant, the cooling fan motor, a relay, or the fuse among other things.
A mechanic would check for power at the fan motor after checking the fuse.
Is the check engine light on ?

Engine over heats

Check for collapsed radiator hose first.

Do the cooling fans come on? If not, check fuse, relay and if still no function- fan thermostat switch.

If fans do come on, replace water pump.

My engine temp gauge goes way up when the car is stuck in traffic, when I begin to roll the temperature gauge goes back down. I assume that this is a sensor issue, can this be changed easily?

I would assume that the sensor is probably doing EXACTLY what it is designed to do....measure engine temperature! An engine will get hot when sitting in traffic if the radiator cooling fans are not working. The engine temperature will then go back down when the vehicle starts moving and air begins to flow through the radiator.
Get your radiator cooling fans checked!

I have been keeping up on the maintenance on my 99' SL2 and it just started to overheat on the way home from work. I checked the antifreeze and other liquid levels. I also noticed the ac will run but it...

Check to make sure that the engine cooling fan is running when the a/c is on. If this fan isn't running then the a/c won't cool for more than a minute or so and the engine will overheat when in slow or stop & go traffic BUT the engine may stay cool if you are driving at highway speeds [40 mph and above] due to the amount of air being forced through the radiator and a/c condensor. If you find the fan[s] isn't running at all then check the engine cooling fan fuse next as it may have blown. Hope this gives you a place to start looking and good luck!

My 93 Saturn SW2 begins to overheat when idling after driving. I can cool the engine by turning on the AC. Is this a thermostat problem? Or what else may be wrong?

Sounds like a relay or fuse problem, at worst it's your fan #1 has gone bad and needs to be replaced. Before replacing anything, check all your fuses, relay, wire leads and harness at the fan.
Good luck and thank you for using Fixya.
