Well not usally it sounds like the thermostat is sticking i had this promblem on my 01 grand am it was themostat sticking i fixed that by replacing thermostat it worked fine for a year then started to do it again finally noticed that my antifrezze was dirty and i needed a flush have you flushed or changed yours best bet flush the antifreeze then replace thermostat
