The key ignition on our 1996 Nissan has always been difficult to start. The key has to be turned hard and pushed up and in to start the car. I changed the ignition harness and tried starting the car with a screwdriver in the harness...no start. The pre-start panel lights etc all come on normal. The engine runs great once it starts. There is a part mounted above the manifold that makes a "grinding" noise when the key is turned for just a few seconds.
Any ideas?

There is a silver box underneath the center console, just to the right of the gas pedal.
Pull off the plastic cover (it has two plastic fasteners. It will go back on).
Peel back the plastic film covering the screw.
Put the key in and turn the ignition switch on, but do not strt the car (all the warning indicator lights should go on).
Turn the screw all the way clockwise for two or three seconds and turn turn it back. Repeat just to be sure.
Turn the key off. When you turn the key back on the Check Engine light should be off.
Replace the plastic film over the screw and replace the plastic panel.

Is there a clicking sound? The first thing that I would check is to make sure that the starter motor is getting voltage. If it is getting voltage then I would say that the motor is bad and needs to be replaced. If it is not getting voltage then it could be a bad fuse, relay, or a bad ground. All of these are probabilities. The last thing that I would check for is a bad ignition switch especially since the accessories come on.
