Question about Volkswagen Passat

1 Answer

97 Passat Dash Light Dimmer Test. I want to test the rheostat that dims the dash lights. I've removed the light switch assembly, it is in one unit, a rotary/pull knob for the parking lights, headlights and driving lights and a thumdial rheostat for the dash light dimmer. One large electrical connector goes into the back. I'd like to test the rheostat and need to know which terminals I need to check resistance between. alternately if I knew the wire color that went to the dash lights I could trace it back. Thanks

Hi.
There were some mid year changes to things like wiring diagrams for your Year Model. It is a great car too.
Take down the vin number [ check for RECALLS while your at it] and call or go to the local dealer - they will fax or print out FREE - exactly what you are wanting AND the best part it - it isn't generic. 90% of all parts ordering today require the Vin number.
Best of it

Dash lights in my 2003 buick century will not dim and will only come on after I turn dome light on then off

a little complicated but here's the deal. most dash light dimmers are really a rheostat and by what you are describing, the coil portion of the rheostat is 'fried' but this will still allow the non-dimming portion of the coil to operate non-dimmed. the dome light part of this is actually another separate switch that is engaged once the max dash light adjustment is reached, it has little to do with the dimmer what-so-ever. This is at least a $200 (or more) repair from a good shop, could be even pricier at a dealership, not counting the dimmer itself.

Dash lights dim when outside lights turned on

Dash lights have much to do with the outside lights. There is factory built in system with the dash lights. When the car is driven during night time the dash lights automatically become dim to eliminate the eye irritation to the driver.
If it is equipped with dimmer switch the variable resistance or its electronic circuit may be defective and be replaced.

Dash lights out

check the instrument panal fuse. if ok check and be sure if tail lights and etc are working.if they are working and still no panal lights, it maybe there is no power going through dimmer switch. see if power is going to switch. if not coming out of switch it is bad. the wheel where you dim the lights has a rheostat inside and it may have given out.Check your headlight switch. Sometimes the switch goes bad and the dash lights won't light. Replace the switch for the fix. if not the dimmer switch is bad.

If you already have the switch out, go ahead and replace it. the carbon brush that changes the resistance for dimming is old (1997). Test by one lead on your meter to the brush. The other lead to the large terminal on the rheostat coil. Rotate the shaft to see if resistance varies.

pull the dash light dimmer rheostat and test it, chances are it is open and is the problem, If the dimmer has power to it and the lights don't work then the dimmer switch is defective, the fuse is most likely not a problem, it would be the instrument cluster fuse, remember any fuse being blown indicates a shorted circuit.

When I turn on the headlamps the dash lights go out. Guages all work, radio display disappears also. fuse is good and tried changing headlight switch

Get a test light, and ground the clip, put the tip of the test light on the dash light fuse.Turn the knob to dim,and brighten the dash lights, see if the test light reacts with the dimmer switch. If it does not, then there is a wire jumped to by pass the dash lights somewhere. If the test light dims, and brightens, then there is a wire of going to the dash,or bad connection where the harness clips into the dash.

Dash light donot operate

are you sure the dash lights are not turned off, have seen many cars come through the shop this way, the other issue would be the dash light dimmer rheostat, test it with an ohm meter.

Dash lights come on when dome light goes out

The only possible location I can think these circuits cross is at the headlight switch. The dimmer rheostat or the wheel you turn to dim and brighten your dash lights also should turn on your dome light so I think maybe a new headlight switch assembly or rheostat should fix tour problem
