Check engine light but the code reader doesn't see any codes. Resetting the ecu - vehicle will run for hours without light coming back on. When vehicle sits for about an hour or so. check light stays on after engine is started. Smog station says ecu failing to complete initiallization. All Test parameters on smog tests excellent Fails intialization thus failing. Replace ecu and reflash. Retighten ground connection. This has been ongoing problem since 2005 spent 1000.00 to get passed in 2008. problem keeps coming back.

This car was bought used in 2005 have put over 50,000 miles on it been plagued with check engine lights since a few months after purchasing. spent over 1000.00 two years ago getting it to pass smog. check engine came back several months later. It's girl friends car she should have pursued the problem but I'm not going to go there- sore subject. perhaps I should check into 02 sensor more. I just don't know what would cause light to come on after it sits for an hour then shows up next time you start. something to do with heat. I believe O2 sensors don't come into equation when you first start up. It take a few minutes for them to warm up- correct. Someone else suggested temp sensor but the heat guage works fine. Coming back from vacation the speedometer went nuts and bounced around for a day and never did anything after that. friend though it was ground connection. not sure if that has any thing to do with problem.

Thank you for information it was right on with what I was seeing. I found someone with a good code reader. The code is p401 which is restricted egr air flow. I read several posts about that, cleaning out a part.

Hi,

This is a Known Problem on this Model and a Technical Bulletin is already issued for the same.

Details :-

This article supersedes TSB 04-3-1 to update service part information and applications.
ISSUE:

Some vehicles may exhibit a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) "ON" with or without the following symptoms: Rough Running, Lack of Power, Surge or Poor Fuel Economy, along with diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's) P0401, P0402, P1400 or P1401. This may be caused by an intermittently functioning tube-mounted delta pressure feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor (Figure 1).
ACTION:

For vehicles equipped with a tube-mounted DPFE sensor, perform the following diagnostic procedure and repair action. This procedure supersedes the diagnostic procedure in the PC/ED Manual for the issue described above.

When you use your scan-tool are you looking at the screen that shows the readiness status of the different fields? If there is an area that shows a failure to complete initiation, what is this failure in (EVAP, 02, ).
Also back in 2002 what did you have done that cost $1000.00?
What I gather is that your suv has an active code and when you reset the ECU the light stays off while the ECU is in default. And then when it comes buck on-line the light returns.
If your scan-tool isn't picking up an engine code while the light is on then the code is dealer specific. Generic scan-tools are a great tool but they will only pick-up generic codes.

Ok you most likely will not like me at all -but - here goes. The one thing none of the readers or test can pick up are bad cam lobes. If the cam is not adjusted right and you have hydrolyic lifters you will get this problem and the car will still ring great. My guess is you recognise there has been some power loss but thevehicle has so much power it just breezes through the power curve and you don't think about it until inspection time.
I am sure this is far from what you want to hear but I say - take the vin - and check for RECALLS - they get lost in the mail or some such. You do not have to have bought the vehicle new to get RECALLS fixed free. Because of your problem -please also ask about Service Bulletins as they sometimes address things like a sneaky exhaust gas problem. As an easier thing to check I would look close at the o2 sensors and all connections should be pulled and replugged. Sometimes with electronic - tight isn't good. I am a retired Rolls Royce mechanic from Palm Beach Motors and I can tell you - Tight in electronics is not always good. Check the connections by pulling them and re-plug them Fuses too.

Please give me some feed back when you have a chance to try the suggestions I gave you. The fact is - I had this very same problem and the computers never once picked it up it is the one variable you will ignore to your disadvantage.

When i went for my E Test they asked me if my check engine lite was on in the last thirty days and if I reset the computer I was to run the car and come back in two weeks. I drive an 2005 car.

Check Engine Light 2003 X' Type 2.5 Told that previous owner drove the car for a long time without resetting and it will take 3 to 15 resets before it sets permanently. No codes show up on the reader...

When you reset a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) on any OBD2 vehicle (Late 97 and up) you have to drive it for an unspecified period of time after the code is cleared before it will pass an emissions test. This is so people don\'t clear them right before going for an inspection.
If the light was on, there is a problem. Rarely does resetting the code fix it. I would run it until the light comes on then read the code. You can assess the problem from there.

2006 VW Jetta code U0100

This problem is with ecu / ecm= engine control computer. These are a common and horrible problem on vw's, particularly on tdi's. The signs in a tdi are when car dash lights come on, but no glow plug light, trans gear lights flash, but car still tries to crank. And hopefully ecu has enough power to out out code u0100= no communication with ecu. Unfortunately the ecu will need to be replacd. The ecu is located under the hood, near and under the wipers. Used ecu with same codes run $50-200. New $1000. If get used one make sure has a return policy. codes must match production quarterly year.

Check engine light comes on and transmission shifts early. Codes ran,had fuel codes and transmission etc,, could this be the mass air flow sensor

try resetting your ecu. unplug your battery for 2 to 3 hours then plug back. you will probably get idling problems and shifting probs for most a week but your ecu should tell your car everything after that. I assume its a auto tranny. i don't think it would be the mass air flow, check ur air filter and housing but i doubt that!

Is there a way to reset computer for check engine

2 ways. Go to auto zone & get free scan to get DTC codes and have them erase. Or, disconnect your battery for an hour. It may run rough for 10 miles as it relearns strategy, but codes should be gone.

May come back if issue still there. Get codes & report back or Google the codes,

2003 Buick Century Sevice Engine light

A check engine light doesn’t always mean a big problem or an expensive repair is ahead. However, driving a car with the check engine light on could mean that you are doing further damage to the engine, depending on the problem. It’s always best to get the vehicle checked at your earliest convenience.

Because there are so many possible reasons for the check engine light to come on, pulling the codes for the event can be helpful when the problem is not immediately evident. Even if the check engine light is only on a short time, a code will be stored in the ECU for later retrieval.

I suggest scannin your ECU to know which fault code there.

Hope helps (remember rated this).

I have a 2007 Volvo 670. The check vehicle ecu comes on. The fault code is MID 144 PID 191 FMI 5. THe truck won't go pass 1400 rpm, the speedometer doesn't work, the cruise doesn't work, the engine break doesn't work. I have to turn the truck off going down the road at highway speed for about 10 seconds and it'll go back to normal. Can anybody help?

Clearing codes for transfer case

There is a simple way really of doing it, you can buy a code reader at auto zone or leave the battery disconnected from the vehicle for about a day. The power storage unit in the ecu will run out and reboot basically. There usually about 150.00 but you can dump the code all day long but if the problem comes up again, the code and check engine light will come back on again.

Engine Check Light's been on for LONG! PO118 code

All is not well with this vehicle. It is hard to start and gets poor fuel mileage. Do not be surprised if you have ruined the O2 sensor and possibly the catalytic converter by letting this go for 2 years. Have the ECU scanned with an OBD2 scan tool. This will give you the code that has set the light. Use that code to help diagnose the problem. Once you fix the problem you reset the light with the same OBD2 scan tool. Resetting the light without repairing the problem will do no good. It will just come back on.
