Bad Clutch Fan? Rear ac/heat don't work front only works on 4

2003 Chevy Trailblazer. How can you tell if the clutch fan is bad because I'm able to stop it with my hand. The rear heat/ac don't work and the front only works on speed 3, could this be a resister?

Just found out..the fan clutch is not electronically controled..I wanted to add to that the fan doesn't seem to working properly and the engine is getting hot..the gauge isn't reading hot but the engine is unusually hot

Changed resistor for the AC. Front a/c works but the rear still doesn't work?

  • melindasnead May 14, 2010 you know where the rear blower motor or resistor is located?

The fan clutch isnt engaged at all times, therefore it may be normal to hold it in place (not recommended). On these trailblazer's 4.2L engine the fan clutch is electronically controlled. Usually when this vehicle's fan clutch malfunctions, there is a random ticking noise while idling or at a stop, also the "service engine soon" may turn on. As for the the fan speed problem, this may be a faulty blower resistor malf (typical) or climate control unit may be faulty. Hopefully this helps!!

I service these vehicles, and they ALL have electronically controlled fan clutch. The only way to see the the electrical wiring is to remove the entire fan clutch (the electrical connector is in front of the fan). The electrical connector is on the top driver side of the radiator, its black and hanging on to the radiator fan shroud.

So this issue is much more complex. I'd recommend checking the the following: rear A/C blower motor, rear fan switch, power connector for voltage to the blower motor, and fuses. Surely you'll be able to pinpoint the fault. Hopefully this helps!!

2003 chevy trailblazer cooling temp running 230

Smart man using a scanner for the actual temp. Assuming you're not losing coolant....2 things I'd look at here, 1st is you may have air in the system, make sure to purge all the air. 2nd is your fan clutch, I've replaced a few fan clutches in my own Trailblazer. Have had them bad right out of the box brand new. Have had bad brand new fan clutches on 2 of my last Trailblazers. You should hear it engaging especially in stop and go traffic.

Roaring in the front end of my 2004 Chevy Trailblazer 4x4

A jet engine type of noise from the engine area usually means the fan clutch is going bad. I don't think the tach is related to this, that could be the stepper motor for the tach going bad.

2004 Trailblazer Left it runing for 2-3hrs, woke up engine off with ac giving hot air. Way home service engine came on. Codes for bad thermostat or bad heat sensor, but frirnd believed iy migjt be fan...

Suggest changing thermostat and temperature sensor, they are right next to each other and are relatively inexpensive. Whoever does the repair should disconnect the battery during the repair to reset the computer.
The fan clutch will usually not engage fully until the engine is really hot, somewhere around 250+ deg.

Fan cluth or fan assembly

I have a 2004 trailblazer and it keeps over heating at stop lights or while driving slow. I have replaced the thermostat and water pump, but this issue still shows up. It is fine while driving down the highway at 55-65 mph. I have also cleaned the radiator and blew through the fins to clean out the dirt and bugs. Not sure if clutch is operating correctly. How can one tell if it is and are these electric? I know there are approx 5 wires running to the front of the clutch, but not sure if this gets a voltage signal to engage the clutch fan. Any ideas?

Trailblazer A/C clutch blows hot !

If it is cycling then its low on freon .. Try to put in one can and this will take care of your problem.. The cycling is due to being low .. The clutch is operated by a pressure switch .. when the clutch kicks in it pressures up but not enough freon will kick it back off and starts over again ... Thanks Jerry
